语法

• 1、直接引语

他说："我是笨蛋"
He says, "I'm a fool."

• 2、间接引语

他说他是笨蛋
He says (that) he is a fool

• 3、总结：
  • 引号打开变宾语从句。看引号中的句子类型（陈述句、疑问句）
  • 设身处地 转换角度
    • 人称
    • 时态
    • 代词或状语等

陈述句 + that，that不做句子成份，只是分隔主句和从句
1、He will help us.
  We know that he will help us.

疑问句，有what，是特殊疑问句。所以以Wh或How开头的，都是特殊疑问句。把主语放在所有谓语动词之前。
2、What did you say?
  We know what you said.

一般疑问句。1、把主语提前。 2、因为一般疑问句，回答一般YES、NO。所以要加whether/if，表示是否。
3、Is she coming here?
  We know if she is coming here.

课文

• 1、"I am inquiring a certain patient".

Mr. Gilbert said that he was inquiring a certain patient.

• 2、"When will Mr. Gilbert be allowed to go home?"

He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home?

• 3、"Was my operation successful?"

He asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful.

so 是个代词，指代上文。
