Research report on China online talent shows in 2018 —— Taking “Idol Producer” and “Produce 101” as examples

In recent years, the online variety shows appear constantly and sustainable development in China. The main reasons are the development of the Internet and the popularity of intelligent terminal, people’s video viewing habits changing and the growing demand for online variety shows.In order to meet the needs of the audience, capital and content producers have been gathering in the online variety shows, and the online video platform has further promoted the development and growth of the online variety show market.
From 2015 to 2017, the number of online variety shows increased from 96 to 197, more than doubling in number. Most of mainstream video websites launched online variety shows and joined the fierce market competition.
In 2015, the total play amount of the top 10 online variety shows was 7.42 billion, however the number has risen to 26.4 billion in 2017. The attraction of online variety shows to the audience is rapidly increasing, and it has become an important flow source for online video platform.
Among all online variety shows, talent shows have the highest audience coverage, with 47 out of every 100 viewers having watched talent shows. Since 2018, “Idol Producer” and “Produce 101” have inspired the trends of the online talent shows, and about half of the network viewers have watched such programs.
By the end of May 2018, iQiyi's reality boy group survival show "Idol Producer" had had a total of 3.14 billion views, while Tencent Video's "Produce 101", a girl group survival show, had only six episodes at present but had had 2.84 billion views.
About 43.8 percent of "Produce 101" viewers purchased video's membership service, which is higher than other online shows. More than 20 percent of those who liked "Idol Producer" had purchased the products advertised in the program, and 14.1 percent of "Produce 101" fans had downloaded the app in the advertisement.
The audience of "Idol Producer" is mainly 19 to 24 years old female, and about 30% of them have bachelor's degree or above. Among the audience of "Produce 101", 30.9% had bachelor's degree or above, and the audience aged 25-34 was the largest, followed by the audience aged 19-24.
Among those watching the two programs, more than 70 percent said they watched the programs because they thought they were good and interesting, and 40 percent said they watched them because they were their favorite type.
In terms of the program content, good look is an important factor to attract the attention of lots of audience, and more than 30% of the network viewers pay attention to the "talent" factor in the online shows.
