The Oppressed Star - Project

The Oppressed Star was a mini project that I decided to do to remember the Jewish people who died in the gruelling events of the Holocaust in WW2.

Name Choice

The reason for naming my Holocaust memorial the Oppressed Star was to remind people the situation that the Jewish people had to go through and how they were oppressed of all their privileges and not given any freedom to roam around and do what they please.

Materials

My miniature 1/27 scale of the model is planned to be made out of thin sheets of polished aluminum because I believe that metal was not something that the Jewish people had in the camps and also because of its useful malleability for building the structure. The reason for its thinness is to portray that the Jewish people themselves were very slim as they were starved and also that they had a very small amount of resources to deal with. The reason for the 1/27 scale is because the actual size of the memorial would be approximately the size of a Jewish person in WW2.

Location

The area I would place my memorial would be in a very populated place where many people sit down to chat or walk by. Many people would notice the memorial and hopefully consider it to be special and respect what happened. My memorial is also a work of modern art where kids could freely roam around it and hide under it. My memorial would also have a plaque in front saying the purpose of the memorial and some brief explanations.

Design Features

The first design features that are probably the most significant is the shape of the Star of David. How the star is bent into the ground and four of its corners are piercing the ground and how it’s very bent on the corners that aren’t in the ground.

The bent shape of the star. A bent position is most often associated with stress or in distress. So I represented the painful and resisting of the pain that the Jewish prisoners had to go through. Next, the four corners that are stabbed into the ground. In the Star of David there are six corner points. In my memorial, four or them are stabbed into the ground. This symbolises the way that the Nazis were able to suppress the Jews in everything they didn’t want them to do ⅔ of the time and how ⅓ of the time, the Jews were able to retaliate and fight for liberty. The other two bent points symbolise how all the attempts at retaliation from the Jewish were bent or stopped by the Nazis.

You’ll also notice the misaligned pieces of the star. If you take the memorial out of the ground and flatten it, you’ll notice that the star isn’t perfect. Some of that is due to my primitive cutting equipment, but most of that was done on purpose to symbolise that all the Jewish people in the world were kind of shocked and in a bad way. Hence the crooked star representing the separation and unconnected nature of the religion and culture.
