Ode to the Willow

碧玉妆成一树高，

There stand tall willows with jade-like twigs and leaves.

万条垂下绿丝绦。

Hanging from the trees are numberless green silk ribbons.

不知细叶谁裁出，

Who has tailored all these thin tender leaves?

二月春风似剪刀。

It’s the early spring breeze,which resembles a pair of smart scissors.

【注释】

1. ode[əʊd] 颂诗，颂歌，抒情诗

2. willow ['wɪləʊ] 柳树

3. 碧玉：碧绿色的玉，这里用以比喻春天嫩绿的柳叶。jade [dʒeɪd] 玉，翡翠，碧玉。

4. 妆：修饰，打扮。

5. 一树：满树。一：满，全。

6. 绦（tāo）：丝绳，丝带。这里指像丝带一样的柳条。ribbon ['rɪbən] 丝带。

7. 裁：裁剪。tailor ['teɪlə] 裁剪

8. twig [twɪɡ] 细枝，嫩枝

9. tender ['tendə] 嫩的

10. breeze [briːz] 微风

11. resemble [rɪ'zembəl] 相似，像

12. smart [smɑːt] 灵巧的

13. scissors ['sɪzəz] 剪刀

【译文】

高高的柳树满满地披上了绿枝新叶。万千枝条垂下来，恰似轻轻飘动的绿丝带。谁的巧手裁剪出这细细嫩叶？原来是那二月里的春风，它就像一把灵巧的剪刀。
