Lesson 3 An unknown goddess

Some time ago, an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea. An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini. The city at one time must have been prosperous, for it enjoyed a high level of civilization. Houses, often three storeys high, were built of stone. They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls. The city was even equipped with a drainage system, for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets.

4.prosperous 繁荣的 。prosper的近义词有flourish，thrive，也是很多课程会区分的三个表示“繁荣兴旺”的单词。我查了一些资料，但发现现实用法中其实并没有那么严格。因此我用了牛津词典的原句来解释：

prosper：人或是生意获得成功的增长，尤其是变有钱或有了巨大的盈利。

flourish：发展得好/茁壮成长，这个词还有一个“强调，大张旗鼓”的含义，比如The symphony finishes with a flourish. （交响乐在响亮的乐曲声中结束）

thrive：变得十分成功/健康/强壮

5.civilization 文明。

6.storey （ story American English）（楼）层。比如：the upper storey 上一层，a 50-story building一幢50层的大楼

7. drainage n. 排水。除了我们常见的排水系统，比如 drainage pipeline 排水管道 这类词组外，drain 也有“耗尽”的意思，比如 Sally felt her anger drain away. 萨莉感到自己的怒气慢慢消散了。

8.beneath /bɪˈniːθ/ 常常与 under . below放在一起比较。beneath偏书面语，反义词是on，你可以感受到这个介质的紧挨程度和under，below有所区别。因此，用在形容人上，beneath也有“在…的表面之下”、“与〔某人〕不相称”、“低于”的意思，比如：His mother felt he was marrying beneath him他妈觉得他娶的老婆配不上他（金贵的）儿子。Beneath her charming exterior lies a very determined woman.在她迷人的外貌下面是一个意志坚定的女人。 Hahahah~~

The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the 15th century B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of 15 statues were found. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted.

1.worship，注意前面不是work哦~这是一个宗教感很强的词，意味“敬奉、礼拜”，可做v.和n.我们说的“迎财神”就可以翻译为 to worship the God of Wealth

2.fragment 碎片。可以通过这两个句子感受一下这种“碎”和“裂开”的程度：Nathan remembered fragments of that conversation.内森想起了那次谈话的一些片段；Lough Erne fragmented into a series of lakes.厄恩湖被分成几个湖泊。还可以联想记忆一个 fragile 脆弱的。

3. goddess /ˈɡɒdɪs $ ˈɡɑː-/ 女神。Venus was a goddess worshiped by the Romans.维纳斯是罗马人所崇拜的女神。screen goddess 银幕女神。

The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the 15th century B.C. Its missing head happened to be among remains of the 5th century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips.
