Despite the glum worldwide economy, a growing number of individuals still purchase famous brand products no matter how they are financially comfortable or not. Besides the generally acknowledged fact that hedonistic tendencies have been creeping into countries with developing economies, there are a variety of reasons behind this.

First and foremost, some prefer famous brand goods because they assume that acquiring the expensive and exclusive items such as bags, clothes, shoes, and cars and so on can temporarily increase their self-esteem or impress potential friends. In the Oriental cultures and customs where collectivism is valued, there is usually more pressure to fit in with peers and co-workers.

For the above reason, people are keen on buying famous brand articles because they believe the brands will contribute to greater social acceptance. The “keeping up with the Joneses” mentality epitomizes this famous brand buying motive. This is especially true in fashion. Most obviously, even the ordinary mortal will buy clothing brands that are either perceived as fashionable, voguish and stylish, or that fit into a particular subculture or social group.

Furthermore, some aspire after famous brand products for self fulfillment rather than recognition from others. To be specific, someone may reward himself for his hard work by treating himself to a long-cherished famous brand item. When he chooses a famous brand, he will focus on its functions, placing emphasis on quality standards over status symbols. In addition, appreciation of the product’s appearance or craftsmanship is also an essential reason for those who are fond of a certain brand.

From my perspective, it is a detrimental development. In an age of conspicuous consumption, it is inconceivable that how destructive the influence may be once an ordinary office worker spends irrationally on famous brand items to support his personal or professional image. Irrational consumption and positional consumption will not only aggravate financial burden to individuals, but also will negatively affect social values.
