The chart above demonstrates that China has experienced a fast urbanization process in the past four decades. The share of urban population in China rose from 19.39% in 1980 to 60.6% in 2019. It was a tremendous increase.

The following reasons may explain why the degree of urbanization has increased significantly. First and foremost, spurred by the reform and opening-up policy, China has made remarkable economic progress.

To pursue a better life and secure their children’s promising future, a large number of rural residents migrate to big cities, which greatly increases the urban population and speeds up the urbanization.

What’s more, relevant policies have been implemented to make urbanization meet the necessary realistic needs of urban residents. Chinese government has been taking various measures to boost urbanization, to ensure that residents can enjoy improving basic public services and social security.

Undoubtedly, with the increasing pace of urbanization, the percentage of urban population in China will also rise steadily. China will absolutely make more achievements in urbanization.
