At the end of the dinner party,I returned to the hotel with Hastings.He talked about his problems,but I didn't listen to him.I was thinking about Portia the whole time.
When we arrived at the hotel,Hastings said,"Let me just stand here and look at this marvelous hotel.It's a palace! What expensive fruniture!You have evertything you want.You are rich,Henry.And I am poor."
His words scared me .I,too ,was poor.I didn't have a cent in the world,and I had debts to pay.I needed to win the gentleman's bet.This was my last hope.Henry,just a tiny part of your income can save me.I 'm desperate!"Hastings cried.
"My dear Hastings,sit down here and drink this hot whiskey.Now tell me your whole story,every word of it."
"Do you want to hear my story again?"
"But,you never told me your story."
"Of course I told you my story, as we walked to the hotel.Don't you remebmer?"
"I didn't hear one word of it."
"Henry,are you ill?Is something wrong with you?What did you drink at the dinner party?"
"Oh,Hastings,I'm in love! I can only think about my sweet Portia.This is why I didn't hear your story befor."
Hastings got up from his chair,shook my hand and laughed."I'm very happy for you ,Henry,very happy,"he said smiling."I'll tell you the whole story again."So he sat down and patiently started to teel me his story.
To make a long story short,the owners of the Gould and Curry Gold Mine sent Lloyd to England,to sell the shares of the mine for one million dollars.Any money he received over one million dollars was his to keep.Hastings's dream was to sell the shares for more than one million dollars,and become rich.He had only one month to sell the shares.He had done everyting to sell them, but nobody wanted to buy them.
Then he jumped up and cried,"Henry,you can help me!Will you do it?"
"Tell me how."
"Give me a million dollars and I'll sell you all the shares.You will be the new owner of the gold mine.Don't,don't refuse."
I did not know what to say.I wanted to tell Hastings the truth.But then,an intelligen idea came to me.I thought about it for a moment and then calmly said,"I will save,Lloyd."
"Then I am already saved!How can I thank you-"
"Let me finish,Lloyd.I will save you,but not in that way.I have a better way.I konw everything about that mine.I konw its great value.You will sell the shares by using my name.You can send anyone to me,since people in London know me.I will guarantee the gold mine.In a week or two,you will sell the shares for three million dollars,by using my name.And we'll share the money you earn.Half to you and half to me."Lloyd was very happy and excited.He danced around the room and laughed.
"I can use your name！You name -think of it .The rich Londoners will run to buy these shares.I'm saved! And I'll never forget you.Henry!
一个百万钞票的主意
晚宴结束之后，我跟汉斯汀回到了酒店。他说了很多他的问题，但是我都没有听进去。我在想和portia度过的时光。
当我们到达酒店的时候，汉斯汀说“让我站在这里看一看这套豪华酒店吧。这真是个宫殿！多么昂贵的家具！你拥有你想要的一切，你是一个富有的人。亨瑞，而我却这么贫穷。”
这个词让我感到了恐惧。我也是一个贫穷的人。在这个世界上我没有一分钱，我拥有的只是负债。我需要赢得老先生的赌约。这是我最后的希望。汉斯汀不知道这些真相。
“亨瑞，只需要一点点的你的收入就可以救助我。我很绝望。”汉斯汀祈求到。

汉斯汀从他椅子上起来，摇着我的手笑着说：“我为你高兴，亨瑞，非常高兴。”他笑着说：“我再给你讲一遍我的事情。”他坐了下来耐心的告诉我他的故事。
长话短说，古尔德卡里金矿山的老板送劳爱德去英国，以100万美金的价格卖出矿山的股份。超过一百万的钱归他所有。汉斯汀梦想将股份卖到超过一百万，然后变的富有。他只有一个月来卖股权。他已经做了一切推销他们的事情，但是没有人想买。
他跳了起来祈求说：“亨瑞，你可以帮助我，你愿意帮我吗？”
“告诉我怎么帮。”
“给我一百万，我将卖给你所有的股权。你将是那个金矿的新矿主。千万不要拒绝我。”
我不知道要说什么。我想告诉汉斯汀真想，但是我突然想到一个聪明的主意。我想了一会然后平静的说：“我会救助你，劳爱德。”

“让我说完，劳爱德。我会救助你，但是不是这种方法。我有一个更好的办法。我知道关于我的所有的事情，我知道这很有用。你将以我的名义去卖那些股票。你可以你可以跟任何人说我，伦敦所有的人都知道我。我将担保这个矿山。在一两周，你将以三百万的价格卖出股票，用我的名义。然后我们平分这些钱。”劳爱德非常高兴兴奋，他在房间里大笑跳舞。
“我可以用你的名字，你的名字-想一下。一个富有的伦敦人会跑来买下这些股权，我得救了，我将永远不会忘记你。亨瑞。”
