E02 名词滥用:变动名词
▍Author's Comment
Gerunds, which are part verb, part noun, partake the nature of both. Like nouns, they can be heavy and awkward. But they also inherit some of the virtues of their parent verbs. Like verbs, gerunds can impart motion into a sentence that is stiff and lifeless. And because, like verbs, they usually require the writer to express a subject or a direct object—that is, to say plainly who is doing what—they can clarify meaning.
▍Replacing the Noun with a Gerund
① 例1:
A: The company began its issuance of 100 million foreign currency B shares yesterday.
译文:该公司昨日开始发行一亿支 B 股。
B: The company began issuing 100 million foreign currency B shares yesterday.
② 例2:
A: We shall transform the national bourgeoisie through cooperation with it.
译文:我们应该通过合作的方式进行民族资产阶级的改革。
B: We shall transform the national bourgeoisie by cooperating with it.
③ 例3:
A: We have to concentrate our efforts on agricultural reinforcement.
译文:我们应该集中精力加强农业建设。
B: We have to concentrate on strengthening agriculture. (Review: "Efforts" was eliminated because it is understood in "concentrate.")

▍Sample Topic
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is often a good thing for people to move to a new town or a new country because of the loss of old social connection.
▍Sample Essay
Version 1
No feast lasts forever, and it is not uncommon for a person to relocate at certain stages of his life, often more than once. While different people have different reasons for their relocation to a new city, even a new country, some people make such a decision due to the loss of their old social connection. I don't think this is a wise choice, because they could be even more ill at ease in the new environment and such an escape mentality usually breeds more trouble in the long run.
