教学背景

本单元话题——文物古迹(Cultural relics )历来是全世界较为关注的焦点之一,尤其是在伊拉克战争中,大量代表古人类文明的文物、古迹惨遭破坏,甚至毁灭!本单元学习的是以历史文化遗产为主题,涉及的面很广,与历史、地理等知识相融合,除了学习语言知识,更多地是引导学生对历史文化遗产的热爱以及倡导对它们的保护。

1. Does a cultural relic always have to be rare and valuable? (P1)

难句解读

句意:文物总得是稀有和价值连城吗?

rare

作形容词,意为“稀少的;罕有的;稀薄的”。

例如:

With rare exceptions, he does not appear in public now.除了极其个别的情况外,他现在不公开露面。

It is rare to find such an interesting group of people.很难找到这么一群有趣的人了。

I only saw Helen on the rare occasions when I went into her shop.当我到海伦的店里时,很少时候能见到她。

valuable

作形容词,意为“有很大价值的,很有用,贵重的”。

例如:

Nothing is more valuable than time, but nothing is less valued.没有比时间更贵重的东西,但也没有比它更受轻视的东西。

You will find this little tool valuable for cutting out small shapes.你会发现这件小工具对雕琢小件物品十分有用。

难点深究

rare 的副词形式为rarely,意为“不常;很少;难得”。它的名词形式为rarity ,意为“稀罕;罕见”。rarely用于句首时,和seldom, never等一样,后面的句子要用倒装句式。例如:

Rarely have I seen such a beautiful sunset.我很少见到这样美丽的日落。

句意:存了很久就行吗?

survive

作及物动词,意为“从……中逃生; 比……活得长”;作不及物动词意为“ 幸存”。

例如:

Only two passengers survived the aircrash.这次飞机失事中只有两名乘客幸免于难。

She survived her husband by twenty years.她丈夫去世后她又活了二十年。

He survived his wife for many years.他比妻子多活好多年。

Few survived after the flood.洪水后极少有人生还。

The man was very ill, but he survived.这位男士病得很厉害,可是他活下来了。

valuable

作形容词,意为“有很大价值的,很有用,贵重的”。

例如:

Nothing is more valuable than time, but nothing is less valued.没有比时间更贵重的东西,但也没有比它更受轻视的东西。

难点深究

此句是一个it 用作形式主语的句子,动词不定式to have survived for a long time是真正的主语。该句型结构是:It + be + adj. + 动词不定式。

例如:

It is necessary to learn English well.有必要学好英语。

It is impossible to finish such hard work in such a short time.在这么短的时间内完成这么难的工作是不可能的。

其具体形式还有两种:

(1)It + be + adj. + for sb.+ 动词不定式

这类句型常用形容词easy, difficult, hard, important, possible,wise等作表语,有时候为了强调不定式动作的执行者,常在不定式前加for sb.。

例如:

Its necessary for the young to master two foreign language.年轻人有必要掌握两门外语。

It is unwise to give the children whatever they want.孩子想要什么就给什么是不明智的。

(2)It + be + adj. + of sb. + 动词不定式,这类形容词常是表示心理品质,性格特征的形容词,如:kind, nice, stupid, clever, foolish, polite, impolite, silly, selfish, considerate等。某人和这些形容词可以构成主系表结构。

例如:

Its very kind of you to help me with the work. =You are kind to help me.你帮助我工作真是太好了。

It seemed selfish of him not to share his dictionary with others. =He seemed selfish not to share his dictionary with others.他不给别人用字典似乎是自私的。

3. Frederick William 1, the King of Prussia, could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history.(P1)

难句解读

句意:普鲁士国王威廉一世绝不可能想到他送给俄罗斯人民的厚礼会有这样一段令人惊讶的历史

amaze

作动词,意为“ 使惊奇”,常用于  be amazed at/by (对……大为惊奇)和to ones amazement (使某人大为惊奇的是)的结构。amazed  作形容词,意为“ 感到惊奇的”; amazing  作形容词,意为“令人吃惊的”; an amazing achievement/discovery惊人的成就/发现amazement作名词,意为“惊奇”;  amazingly作副词,意为“令人惊奇的是”。

例如:

I was amazed at his conduct.我对他的行为感到惊讶。

He stood in amazement at the sight.他看到那种景象, 惊愕得呆呆地站在那里。

难点深究

注意amaze, astonish, surprise的区别:都含有“使……惊异” 的意思,而且它们都是一般以事物或他人作主语,以本人作宾语; 以本人作主语时用被动形式。

amaze强调“使惊异,困惑”,其间还有“惊叹,佩服”的意思,是意义很强的词;

astonish表示“使人大吃一惊”,“几乎无法使人相信”,但没有“惊叹”的意思;

surprise语气较上述两词弱,只表示“出乎意外地惊异”。

例如:

We were amazed at the ingenuity with which they solved their difficulties.他们在解决困难中所表现的智慧使我们惊叹。

I was astonished at his rudeness.他的粗野使我大吃一惊。

We were surprised at finding the house empty.我们惊讶地发现房子是空的。

4. The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown color like honey.(P1)

难句解读

句意:选出来的琥珀色彩艳丽,呈现蜂蜜一样的黄褐色。

select

作及物动词,意为“选择, 挑选”。

例如:

She lets her son select his own Christmas present.她让儿子自己选择圣诞礼物。

They were selected from many applicants.他们是从许多报名者当中选出来的。

难点深究

注意choose, select,pick和prefer的区别。都含“挑选”、“ 选择”的意思。

choose 系常用词, 指“一般的选择”, 侧重“凭个人意志或判断进行选择”;

select 强调“在广泛的范围内精选、淘汰”, 侧重“以客观为标准进行选择”;

pick 强调“从个人角度在众多中进行挑选”, 有时含有“任意选择”的意思;prefer指“偏爱”、“更喜欢”, 有时“只表示自己的看法, 不一定加以选择”。

例如:

Leave it to you to choose between the two methods.任你在这两种方法中作出抉择。

They were selecting maize seeds.他们在选玉米种。

Students have to pick three courses from a list of 15.学生们必须从15门课中选修3门。

I prefer tea to coffee.比起咖啡来我更喜欢茶。
