He was brought up in an aristocratic family.
His grandfather served twice as British prime minister.
However, he was so depressed and sad during his childhood as his parents and sister all perished one by one when he was only 6-year-old. After that, he was taken care of by his grandmother, a strict lady, and educated alone at home.
With such a painful experience at an early age, he became more mature than his peers in his adolescence, but he had a natural fascination with mathematics and geometry, which made a huge change in his life.
After attending Trinity College Cambridge on a scholarship, he had extraordinary talent in mathematics, logic and philosophy, and soon became a mathematician. But he also developed a deep affection for literature.
He was well known for his influential work, Principle Mathematica.(数学原理)
Ludwig Wittgenstein(维特根斯坦), a philosophical genius with the unique ability of logical thinking, was one of his students at Cambridge University.
He participated in some pacifist activities in World War I and was even sent to prison for his statement against the war.
In 1920, he traveled to China and delivered a series of lectures on philosophy at the Peking University.
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts,” he said.
He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950.
