So this is a course and analytical psychology theory and practice.

And the first year will be focused on fundamentals of analytical psychology it’s theory, this is an introduction to the theory of analytical psychology.

And the first two lectures of today and next week I will speak about C. G. Jung’s life and work.

Jung once said, every psychology is a personal confession.
荣格曾经说过，“每一种心理都是一种自白。”
So when we study a psychological theory, it's important to know something about the creator of the theory.
因此，当我们研究一种心理学理论时，了解其理论的创造者是很重要的。
So the question is who was C. G. Jung?
所以问题是——谁是卡尔·古斯塔夫·荣格？
And this is what I will discuss at the first two lectures to speak about the life of C. G. Jung and its cultural and intellectual background.

Jung was born in 1875 and lived until 1961. He lived for 86 years.
荣格出生于1875年，去世于1961年。他活了86岁。
And I will divide his life into three parts.
我将他的生活分为三部分。
First part I will call preparation of matters from 1875 to 1913.
第一部分，从1875年到1913年，我称之为准备事宜部分。
And the second part, I will call creation and elaboration from 1913 to 1961.
第二部分，从1913年到1961年，我称之为（理论）创作和详细阐述部分。
Today I will speak about the preparation, the first part of his life.
今天我将谈谈准备事宜部分，他生命的第一部分。
The next time,I will speak about the second half of his life.
下一堂课时，我将讲述他生命的第二部分。
So to begin, what was Jung’s Cultural background？
首先，荣格的文化背景是什么呢？
Jung was Swiss, that is, he was a citizen of Switzerland and he spent his whole life living in this country, and Switzerland, and he was deeply immersed in its culture.
荣格是瑞士人，也就是说，他是瑞士公民。他一生都生活在瑞士这个国家，并且深深地沉浸于它的文化之中。
One of the characteristics of Swiss people is very independent.
瑞士人的一个特征是非常自主独立。
They think for themselves, they like to make their own decisions, and they don't like to take orders from anybody else.
他们独立思考，他们喜欢自己做决定，他们不喜欢接受其他人的命令。
Swiss had freed himself from the Habsburg family in the thirteen century and has been an independent land ever since then.
瑞士人大概在十三世纪从哈布斯堡王朝中解放出来，从那以后成为一个独立的国家。
The Swiss is a mountain people. Switzerland’s the land of Alps. And they love the out of doors, love hiking and camping, and above all, they treasure their independence from outside of authorities.
瑞士人地处山区，瑞士是阿尔卑斯之乡。他们热爱户外，热爱徒步旅行和露营，最重要的是，他们珍视自己在当局以外的独立性。
Jung was born to a mother with deep eyes dark roots in Switzerland and all family from the city of Basel .
荣格的母亲是一位有着深黑色眼睛的瑞士人，以及全家都来自于巴塞尔市。
And on his father, he was descended from a German immigrant who came to Switzerland in the Nineteenth century fleeing the wars, that was going on in Germany war’s of independence in 1848, and he arrived in Basel, Switzerland, at that time.
关于他父亲这一边，他是19世纪来到瑞士的德国移民的后裔，当时为了逃离德国正在发生的战争——1848年的独立战争，那个时候，他来到了瑞士的巴塞尔。
Jung was named after his maternal grandfather C. G. Jung also Carl Gustav Jung, they are ancestors who came from Germany and became a professor of medicine in the University of Basel.
荣格是以他的外祖父卡尔·古斯塔夫·荣格命名的，他们是来自德国并且成为了巴塞尔大学里的医学教授最早的一辈人。
He was a very famous man in his time, and he became the rector of the University, that is the president of the University, and he was also very interested in mental health issues of mental health.
在他那个时代，他是一位非常有名的人，他成为巴塞尔大学的院长，也就是现在的大学校长的意思，他对精神健康领域中的精神健康问题也非常感兴趣。
So when Jung decided to study medicine, he was following in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather after whom he had been named.
