I am Todd Strasser, author of more than 140 young-adults books and the documentary, The Wave. I was born in 1950 in New York City, United States. I grew up in a small suburb in New York and was an energetic boy who loved to fish and ski. But at school, I was not getting good grades. Though I loved literature, it was where I failed most. My best was science, but even with that my teachers and parents didn’t give me any motivation until I went to college at Beloit College. Beloit College was a literature-focused school and so I learned to write and started to write small novels. After graduating the college, I had jobs as a newspaper reporter and an advertising copywriter. These jobs were great as I got to surround myself with words. But I didn’t want to tell other people’s stories, I wanted to write my own.
I started to write my own short stories and I published some to the New Yorker, Esquire, The New York Times, and The Village Voice. I got some exposure and published my first book in 1978 when I was 28, Angel Dust Blues. Still, as a newspaper reporter, I have my own ideas. Topics that I have a passion for include, nuclear war, Nazism, bullying at schools, homelessness, and school shootings. Pretty sad, but they are topics that I can think deep in and write some amazing and hilarious books.
A couple years had passed and with the money I got from my books, I used it to start my fortune cookie company, Dr Wing Tip Shoo. Over the next decade, I wrote even more books, but my fortune cookie company was proving to be more successful. Later in around 1990, I moved with my family to Westchester County, New York. In 1993 I started one of my most famous series of books, Help! I’m Trapped in my Teacher’s Body! I now have over 10 of the books in that series and it’s one of my most popular series.
Since then I have published many books and one to note is The Wave. It was based around a true story about the Third Wave Experiment. It was extremely popular in the U.S and so it was made into a short film in 1981. My books went into Germany and so I adopted a pen name, Morton Rhue.
I continued to write novels and now I still write them. My latest novel, American Terrorist, was another popular book. It’s 2018 now and I’m 68 years young, so I am enjoying most of my time, surfing, skiing and spending time with my family.
