Title: Three simple questions you should ask yourself before you respond to misbehavior.

After a long work day, you were busy cooking dinner for the family, while your son came to you with a cup of water. Suddenly, he dumped the whole thing on the floor.

What do you do? Maybe you'd grab him, and tell him through clenched teeth,"Do not dump water on the floor!" Or maybe you'd move him from the kitchen, and put him in time-out. Too often, we react to misbehavior immediately without thinking much about the effect of our action.

Dr.Segel and Dr. Bryson encourages us to take a moment to ask three questions before we react to misbehavior.

1. Why did my child act this way?

2. What lesson do I want to teach in this moment?

3. How can I best teach this lesson?

You may say that I don't have time to think through all the questions. That is fine. The point is building a habit of pause before reacting to misbehavior, and rethinking discipline in a way that will benefit your child's learning experience in the long run.
