The tally(总计) by Johns Hopkins University shows that deaths in the US, Brazil and India make up(组成;构成;弥补) nearly half that total.

Experts caution(警示;警告) that the true figure(数据) is probably(或许;大概) much higher.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called it a "mind-numbing(麻木的;令人心烦意乱的)" figure and "an agonising milestone(令人痛苦的里程碑)".

"Yet we must never lose sight of(忽略) each and every individual life," he said in a video message.

"They were fathers and mothers, wives and husbands, brothers and sisters, friends and colleagues(同事).

The pain has been multiplied(增加) by the savageness(天然的) of this disease."

The pandemic(瘟疫流行) has since spread(蔓延) to 188 countries with more than 32 million(百万) confirmed cases(确诊病例).

Lockdowns(封锁) and other measures(措施) to try to stop the virus spreading(病毒蔓延) have thrown many economies into recession(经济陷入萧条).

Meanwhile, efforts to develop an effective vaccine(有效的疫苗) are continuing - although the World Health Organization(WHO) has warned that the death toll(死亡人数) could hit(冲破) two million before one is widely available(可获得的).

The US has the world's highest death toll with about 205,000 fatalities(死亡人数;死亡率) followed by Brazil on 141,700 and India with 95,500 deaths.
