Fast forward to 2015, when Fast Company released a list of the world’s most innovative companies. Warby Parker didn’t just make the list—they came in first.

1.fast forward：跳到一个时间点或故事的后面内容，作为动词可以直接跟to+时间来用，比如句首的Fast forward to 2015…

The three previous winners were creative giants Google, Nike, and Apple, all with over fifty thousand employees. Warby Parker’s scrappy startup, a new kid on the block, had a staff of just five hundred. In the span of five years, the four friends built one of the most fashionable brands on the planet and donated over a million pairs of glasses to people in need. The company cleared $100 million in annual revenues and was valued at over $1 billion.

2.previous：以前的，having happened or existed before the event, time, or thing that you are talking about now.

这个词用起来会显得上下文很简洁，比如说以前的两个场合就可以说two previous occasions，以前的经验可以说previous experience，犯罪前科可以说previous convictions等。

3.scrappy：这个词有两个释义，散乱无章法的和争强好胜的，我认为在这里应该是后者的意思，翻译为这家有雄心壮志的创业公司。

例句：a scrappy team that plays hard 一支敢打敢拼的球队

4.new kid on the block：on the block有两侧含义，在几条街内或正在销售，结合上下文，我认为这句话的意思是这家公司是一家有雄心的创业公司，比起那些商业巨头，它像是街角的新来的小孩。

5.span：a period of time between two dates or events 〔两个日期或事件之间的〕时距，期间，可以与over/within/in进行连用。

表示期间时除了用during/while等，还可以用这个词：in the span of 5 years…

6.fashionable：popular, especially for a short period of time 〔尤指短时期内〕时髦的，流行的

表示流行除了用in fashion/stylish，还可以用fashionable这个词，比如表达时下艳丽的颜色很流行，可以说：Strong colours are very fashionable at the moment.

Back in 2009, one of the founders pitched the company to me, offering me the chance to invest in Warby Parker. I declined.

7.pitch：pitch除了有扔、针对等含义，还可以表达推销，to try to persuade someone to do business with you, buy something etc，是一种不是那么正式的说法。

例句：Booksellers are keen to pitch for school business.

8.decline：拒绝，to say no politely when someone invites you somewhere, offers you something, or wants you to do something.可以与refuse换着用。

例句：Mary declined a hot drink and went to her room.

It was the worst financial decision I’ve ever made, and I needed to understand where I went wrong.

9.go wrong：用go wrong表示什么事情出现了错误，可以表示出一个走向错误的趋势。

造句：I knew the answer in my mind, but finally I went wrong on that move.
