During the period from the fifth through the third centuries B.C., "hundred schools" emerged and thrived in China. Later times, Ssu-ma T'an classified them into six major schools. The first is Yin-Yang school studing cosmology, which hold that Yin and Yang principles form all universal phenomena. The second is School of Literati, also known as Confucianist school. But literati is more of Confucian or Confucianist.

诸子百家争鸣，后世分其六家。

一曰阴阳家，二曰儒家，三墨家，四名家，五法家，六道家。
