Come what May: British politics

On Wednesday evening Theresa May survived a confidence vote in her leadership with 200 MPs voting for her and 117 against.

This means that she is free from another leadership challenge for the next year.

But Mrs May has been weakened and the rebellion against her is far from over.

Her margin of victory was smaller than Downing Street expected.

Completing the Brexit negotiations with a minority government was always going to be a nightmare; now, in addition, that government has a lame-duck prime minister who lacks the confidence of more than a third of her party.
