    Yet a great many processes depending on such research are sought for with complete secrecy until the stage at which patents can be taken out. Even more processes are never patented at all but kept as serect processes. This applies particularly to chemical industries, where chance discoveries play a much larger part than they do in physical and mechanical industries. Sometimes the secrecy goes to such an extent that the whole nature of the research cannot be mentioned. Many firms, for instance, have great difficulty in obtaining technical or scientific books from libraries because they are unwilling to have their names entered as having taken out such and such a book, for fear the agents of other firms should be able to trace the kind of research they are likely to be undertaking.

新概念第四册开始，文章都很深刻了，不再是以英语流利为准，尽管第四册的目的是english fluency，但是感觉第三册更像是帮助学习者打好fluency的基础，而第四册更像是要学习者有深度的写文章了。今天这篇探讨工业界研发的情况的文章就是，作者讨论作为企业研发是否需要这么高规格的保密措施，是否有必要。的确是工业界的研发如果不保密，对手很轻易就学到了，自然就赶上了，如果保密了，甚至有时候很严格，自己公司内部不同部门都需要严格保密，则会影响研发交流和进展。
