Sherry

The red sea had long since been crossed, and the ship was now on its way over the Indian Ocean; but as always, the sun mercilessly rose early and set late, encroaching upon the better part of the night.

Sherry的笔记:“早过了”的主语其实是船,所以用cross这个动词;“开驶着”没有用具体的动词,用的是be on one’s way; “不依不饶”用的merciless:showing no kindness or pity,有the merciless heat of the sun这种表达。Encroach:If one thing encroaches on another, the first thing spreads or becomes stronger, and slowly begins to restrict the power, range, or effectiveness of the second thing.

The night, like paper soaked in oil, had become translucent.  Locked in the embrace of the sun, the night’s own form was indiscernible. Perhaps it had become intoxicated by the sun, which would explain why the night sky remained flushed long after the gradual fading of the rosy sunset.

Sherry的笔记:translucent:If an object or a substance is translucent, it is almost transparent, allowing some light through it in an attractive way. “分不出身来”具体化成“the night’s own form was indiscernible”这里的form指的是夜的形态shape/appearance,indiscernible :impossible to see, see clearly, or understand. Flushed:这里取red in face的含义。

By the time the ruddiness dissipated and the night itself awoke from its stupor, the passengers in their cabins had awakened, glistening with sweat; after bathing, they hurried out on deck to catch the ocean breeze. Another day had begun.

Sherry的笔记:ruddiness是ruddy的名词形式,同义词有:rosy, red, reddish等;dissipate:to (cause to) gradually disappear or waste;stupor: a state in which a person is almost unconscious and their thoughts are not clear,用stupor形容night很贴切;glisten:If something glistens, it shines, usually because it is wet or oily. If the wind or water catches something, it carries or pushes it along.  A gust of wind caught the parachute.
