Father of fractal geometry, Benoit Mandelbrot has passed away

Mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot died Thursday, October 14, peacefully in his sleep, his beloved wife Aliette at his side.

Benoit Mandelbrot has developed and popularized the science and applications of fractal geometry. A long-time researcher at IBM's Watson Lab, he popularized fractals in a 1982 book The Fractal Geometry of Nature. In the early 1990's fractals were explored by computer vision researchers as a representation of multiscale natural textures, although they were soon supplanted by general multiscale models of greater representational power. Measurement of fractal dimension continues to be used in scientific and engineering image analysis, for example, in materials science.

……

That is sad. I love his Fractal Geometry.

I can still remember the thrill I got when I first saw the colored images of the Mandelbrot set, which shimmered with intimations of infinity.

I will always be grateful to Mandelbrot for that.

Wish him a peaceful rest.
