I have just experienced this exact problem on my magic.
The way to solve the problem is (at least in my situation - returning from a holliday in France)

1. Choose SETTINGS - WIRELESS CONTROLS - MOBILE NETWORKS -
2. uncheck everything unnecesary ie. "Data Roaming" and "Enable always-on mobile" -
3. Change setting on "Use only 2G networks", wait 10 seconds, then change it back.
4. Now try NETWORK OPERATORS. Here you will get a network error (Not the "com.android.phone" error)
Just continue and you'll get your wanted network.
The reason for this behavior is that android uses a new type of network and supports old ones.
Some countries dosen't use this new network.
When your android phone makes a handshake in these countries it'll accept without error, but when it returns to the new type it won't connect.
This must be a bug and you can solve / workaround this by doing the above

I don't know if it will help, but I try a soft reset when applications are acting up. To do a soft reset:

Power down the phone, then hold the home and red buttons until you see a triangle with an exclamation point. Then press the home and back buttons at the same time.

"I'm thinking this bug has to do with whether or not you are automatically selecting a network. I may have been getting that message so frequently because I so frequently locked on to T-Mo."

It wasnt possible for me to change back to "selecting automatically network" because to error showed up instantly. So I made a erase-all-and-reset-to-factory-settings which has worked for a hole 5 minuts now :) Crossing fingers.

I had the same problem after restarting my phone. It worked fine while in airplane mode, but just a few seconds after connecting to the network, it happened again. After some tinkering, I came to the conclusion that it had something to do with selecting networks, and I did what Skooterkurt did, made a full factory reset. Works fine now.

Same problem for me after I was abroad and manualy selected a network with data communication. When I came home I had no network and was asked to enter the pin code after the error message. I changed the setting so that the phone should find the prefered network automatically. After that everything is back to normal. A bug it is.

Hi.

Messing around with my phone I ended up with the same error message.

Before that I went into "Network Operators" and "Rogers" was starred but a second network was available "302880". So being the curious type I tried it and that is when the error started popping up. I tried many things. I noticed that every 40 seconds the phone slipped in to "Airplane" mode but without the plane symbol. Then 4 seconds later "Airplane" mode unchecked and my connection bar went to X. 20 seconds later it reconnected to my 3G. 20 seconds after that it started all over again.

Tried many things. I noticed that all "Mobile Network Settings were unchecked. I checked off "only 3G". No help. Then I went into the "network operators" and after it finished searching I selected "Rogers" so it was starred. The I touched "Select automatically". And the error hasn't shown up again.

It has been 30 minutes now with no repeat of the error. Hopefullt it will stay away and hopefully it will work for you guys too.

I have had some bizarre txt messages sent to me lately and I erased them. Now it works.

There could be link between these messages (fuzzed messages) and the problem.

Let me know what you thinks?

I am having this same error, whenever i go abroad.
Set it to airplane mode, and then selected a specific network and then it worked until i went into an area where this particular network didnt have coverage.
Since i often roam into neighbouring countries this is fairly annoying.

This might help:

1. Switch off Phone
2. Remove the Sim Card (Carrier A)
3. Start your phone without the Sim Card
4. Search for Network (At this point of time, you must get it working as normal, it will show you the Carriers - including A)
5. Select Carrier A (make sure its selected), wait 30 seconds, then Select Automatic
6. Switch Off Phone
7. Insert Sim Card Carrier A & Start Phone

I have the same problem as tryberg & nathron. I had my phone powered off all night (everything worked before). My phone is rooted. I turned on my phone this morning and played some games. I then noticed that it said "No Service". When I go to Wireless Controls I get process com.android.settings has stopped unexpectedly. When I force close that I sometimes get other apps that I have to force close. It doesn't make me force close other apps all the time so I don't recall what they were.

I removed a bunch of apps and rebooted the phone. It worked after that. The only apps that I can think of that I installed before I powered off my phone last night (and since removed) was m:Racing, Asteroids, Raging Thunder - LITE, Fishin' 2 Go (LITE), & Pinball. The other apps I removed I am pretty sure I have had them installed prior to a few power cycles. That leads me to believe there is something wrong with one or more of the apps I listed or some sort of conflict. I didn't play Asteroids but I tried out the other four last night. I recall having an issue with Fishin' 2 Go and one of the racing games (one worked, one didn't, don't know which though).

I'm was in the same boat as the last 4 posts. Running an HTC Hero on Sprint. It has happened twice now, first time I did a hard reset, which fixed it for a while. Didn't want to have to do that again, so I tried radyr's method of uninstalling some apps, and it worked! I uninstalled WeatherBug and Advanced Task Manager, which seemed to do the trick. A simple reboot and everything was working again. Not sure which of the two did it, but I'm not inclined to install either of those again. Are any of you having this issue running either of these apps?

Symptoms for me were no mobile network connection, and many force close errors on lots of different system settings (couldn't get into Wireless Controls menu for example) Both times this happened my battery had been totally depleted, wonder if that might also be related? Anyone else have this happen when their battery ran out?

Anyway, uninstalling apps seemed to fix it, which suggests an app was causing trouble with system settings or something along those lines.. Advanced Task Manager would have been the only one I could think of that might mess around with stuff like that.

My Droid Eris was having the same problems as some previous posters: no signal, force closes on some apps and menus, and I couldn't get into my wireless settings. It started after my battery died while using Google Maps. After reading these posts, I deleted some apps that I had downloaded during that power cycle, and also cleared the Google Maps cache through Manage Applications in Settings. Then when I powered down, I removed and replaced the battery, just for good measure. Can't be 100% sure, but it seems like I had a bad app. Anyway, it's working fine again (finally!), so I hope this helps someone.

I too had this issue when my battery died in my HTC Hero.  Following the suggestion to remove applications I set upon the task to find the actual app that was causing the problem.  I systematically removed each new app one at a time, removing the battery after each uninstall.  I started with apps that use the system settings but after having no luck with those, I then decided to remove "Task Manager".  My phone now boots and connects to the network without any errors!  To prove it was "Task Manager" that caused the problem, I reinstalled it.  After removed the battery to simulate a hard reset;  the problem came back.

This app had been on my phone through several soft resets, so I did not suspect it to be the problem.  There are other task killers out there, so I would avoid this application until they fix this serious bug.

There's also a good thread on this over here:  http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-droid-eris/3596-android-process-acore-stopped-unexpectedly-4.html

I have seen this happen a lot with my Eris.  I have never done a hard reset, which is probably a definite temporary fix, however I was wondering how I could look at the logs on the phone, so I can see if the issue is with a particular app (my first theory) or the theory that the free space on the internal ROM is too low, and that the HTC Sense UI has a memory leak, or needs more memory than that is available during boot.

Personally, I just wish that the phone could be configured to take advantage of the SD card for _some_ apps.  I understand that the 'core' apps should stay in a fixed ROM, but why not let users install 3rd party apps to the SD card?  Especially the memory hogs like Gmail, Documents to Go, Waze, etc...  Those are not critical apps to the phone, so why do they need to take up so much space on the ROM?

Fighting with this today. As the others, I've tried all manner of things. This seems to happen to me about once a week, and, I'll fiddle with a bunch of stuff, uninstall a lot of things, and eventually it will become usable again.

Today, first thing I removed was Advanced Task Manager.

Worked immediately after this.

Basically the eMail database get crashed and we need to manually remove it and re-configure it. Waring, your email settings will be removed by this process and you will need to setup your exchange email again !!!

Problem:
The application Email (process
com.android.email) has
stopped unexpectedly.

The email app is setup to sync with my works exchange but whenever I would open an email I got the error and then get kicked out to the list of email again.

I found a fix by doing the following.
Go to Home>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications
Click the Menu button and select "Filter"
Select "Running"
Scroll down to the "Email" application. Select "Clear Data"

I did all this with my sim card unattached (not sure if it made a difference) i turned my phone off and placed sim back in phone and turned phone back on. phone was picking up service once again and i no longer was recieving the error message. hope this helps

e.rob0823 is absolutely correct. I had the same problem in whivh my phone continuously repeated "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. I unistalled all the apps I downloaded the day previous to the error, turned off my phone and then joyfully celebrated when I turned my Hero back on.

@MyTrueTech:As I said I have a droid eris running 1.5 with senseUI.I have task manager also, it was one of the first apps I ever downloaded, & I've never had to uninstall task manager to fix my phone. The only solution I've found has been a factory reset. One time it happened, I had just installed ahome lite, which I believe caused a conflict with senseUI. If I remember right I had the same problem again after installing better keyboard.Again I did a factory reset & it worked.the developer insisted this was a problem with my phone but I'm not convinced as I have slideit, Shapewriter & ultra keyboard which I use all time. All work fine. The other time was from dropping the phone (I've found the phone to be very slippery sometimes). I have however dropped it 1 or 2 other times, in which it shutdown,  but worked when I restarted. Those who don't have one already I suggest you get an app like appmonster (formerly appmanager), for backing up your apps. It gives you the option of searching for them on the market, so you still get updates. If this happens again I may try some of the other solutions on here.

@nathron:  I have an Eris as well, and I used to get these errors *all* the time.  Granted, I was always installing apps to try them out, and would sometimes add 4 or 5, before restarting, so I ran into the problem often.

Since I have updated to the 2nd leak of 2.1 for the Eris, I have not had one single issue with 'com.android.phone' stopping unexpectedly.  Not once!

It doesn't look promising for an official 2.1 update from Verizon - not sure if they are trying to up-sell people who might want an Eris, and try to get them to get an incredible or Motorolla Droid.  So, if you don't mind a little risk, I recommend updating to the 2.1 leak (the 2nd leak, there are two, and I have done both, but find the second one less buggy)

The Eris is *very* slippery!  I have a silicone/rubber case which gives it significant grip to really increase the coefficient of friction between the phone and your skin :-)  This is the case I got from Amazon:   http://amzn.to/bUzXDj

Hope this helps out someone....

Best Regards,

Bruce

I was totally freaking out when things started going haywire on my Eris. I tried shutting the phone down and restarting several times, only to get this error and a couple of others. Couldn't access wireless settings either. Then I started uninstalling suspects that I had only installed today with no luck. Then I found this forum and saw the note from 'paulie' about "Advanced Task Manager". I uninstalled that and restarted and it works fine now. Phew! It's the only phone I have so my next step was to go to the store and see if they could figure it out. Thanks guys!

Thank you everyone who posted solutions!

I was having similar problems with my Sprint Hero for about a month: "The application ________ has stopped unexpectedly.  Please try again." >> Force Close.  Every time I rebooted I would get this message for about 5 or 6 apps including Google Maps, com.coremobility.app.vnotes, com.google.process.gapps, and worst of all, com.android.phone.  I had no phone/data service - the only thing that seemed to fix the problem was a factory reset.  This means all my apps were wiped too.  I called HTC and was told it was a bad radio; I took it in to the Sprint store and they swapped it out for me.  About 2 weeks later (tonight), same thing.

After trying several of the suggestions in this thread, I think I know what's going on (at least in my case).  It looks like the phone needs a certain amount of free space in order to boot properly.  I don't know what the exact amount is, but I've been able to turn the problem on and off again by installing and uninstalling various apps.  It doesn't seem to matter which app, just the overall storage space used.  This might explain why some have reported success by clearing application data too.

Not sure if this will help everyone, but it's worth a try.  Much better than another factory reset.

I had the same error message, but I couldn't make or receive calls -  It started in the middle of a phone call, and the phone just started to reboot.

I tried all the the fixes including setting the default network etc with no luck.

I finally just started clearing the cache, email data, and removing old apps that I did not use and it worked right off the bat without rebooting.

I think the poster above me has the right idea, the phone needs some free space.  But it's also possible that one of those apps was conflicting with the dialer somehow.

got this response from my work i.t. dept after spending a day talking to verizon support:

There is a known issue with the EVO/Incredible and the mail app crashing. Although this is an issue with the device itself, Notify has come up with a work around. We needed to select your Drafts folder and Sent Items folder for syncing on the Notify Server. I have done this for you. Then we will need you to delete the account off of the device and register the device again. This should fix your mail app from crashing.

One gets the same message when the phone is confused with 2 G and 3 G .
If this is related to the APN , and if you get the message when u attempt to change the APN to enable the connection , the best thing one can do is to download the APN backup and restore from the market , delete all the APN's using this program and start afresh.

I have a HTC Desire HD.
This issue appeared for one of my contacts.
Any number I chose from the contact ended with the com.android.phone stopped unexpectedly error.

The following is what I did to resolve the issue for my contact.
This may work for you.

- go to phone app
- find contact with issue
- unlink contact from each service (Facebook, Skype, etc )
- save changes and get back to your list of contacts
- go to one of the contacts you unlinked
- proceed to link them back up together and save changes
- try to call from your contact again

This worked for me where it was a contact that had an issue, not every contact.

Hope this assists.
