In a deal valued at $4.5 billion, HP today announced it has agreed to acquire Mercury Interactive Corp., bringing the value of the HP Software business to more than $2 billion in annual revenue, the company said.
“HP’s software strategy is to be the clear leader in end-to-end enterprise IT management and help our customers tightly align IT priorities with changing business requirements,” Thomas E. Hogan, senior vice president of software at HP, said in a statement. This vision will be achieved through the combination of HP’s OpenView IT management software and Mercury’s BTO (Business Technology Optimization) Enterprise software.
Still to be answered are such questions as what happens to Mercury’s myriad partners, and whether HP, which has acquired software in the past only to abandon it later on, can make the deal work.
