Tor on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx

Since Lucid Lynx is still in beta, tor isn’t packaged up at torproject.org yet but there is a PPA!

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sevenmachines/tor
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install tor vidalia privoxy firefox-torbutton
To start it up with a vidalia:

Applications > Internet > Vidalia

Click on settings and add privoxy to the proxy “/usr/sbin/privoxy”

Stop tor in Vidalia and make sure privoxy is down.

$ sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy stop

Add “forward-socks4a / localhost:9050 .” (without quotes) to the bottom of: /etc/privoxy/config

$ sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy start

Start tor backup either command line or through using Tor on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
