abase ,demean,debase,degrade,humble,humilimate  mean to lessen in dignity or status. 意思都是指的是身份或者地位的下降。

abase: suggests losing or voluntarily yielding up dignity or prestige  意思是丢失或者主动的放弃尊严或者声望  a fine stage actor who abased himself by turing to televsion   ant exalt, extol.

demean: suggest unsuitable behavior or association as the cause of loss status. 意思是不得体的行为，不好的联系导致降地位，身份。commercial endorsements（认可，支持；） demean the Olympics
