pumped/ pumped up: very excited about sth
I'm really pumped about this opportunity.

5. Then we were going to take a fifteen-minute bus ride to the fairgrounds for an outdoor movie night.
fairground: 露天市场 an open space on which a fair takes place

smudge: (n.) a dirty mark; (v.) to make a dirty mark on a surface SYN smear

gain ground: to become more successful
It was feared that the extreme right would gain in the election.
lose ground: to become less successful
The Indian team seem determined to regain the ground they lost in the last game.

waterworks: 排水系统
turn on the waterworks: informal, to start crying in order to get sympathy

grilled cheese: 烤奶酪(三明治)
grilled fish: 烤鱼
11. The chocolate milk in the glass now had a two-inch froth on the top.
froth: (n.) [frɒθ] (饮料上的) 泡沫 ;
froth 还可以引申为 talks or ideas that are attractive but have no real value or meaning
The book has too much froth and not enough fact.
frothy: 1. 有泡沫的, eg. a mug of frothy coffee
2. a frothy book, film etc is enjoyable but not serious or important
12. Amos became super popular and Julian, because he missed the whole thing, was really out of the loop.
be out of the loop: informal, not be part of a group of people who make important decisions 局外人
(OPP) be in the loop 局内人
