汉语：按人口计算，中国是世界上最大的国家；按领土面积计算，是第三大国家，仅次于俄罗斯和加拿大。

不好译文：according to population figure. China is the largest country in the whole world; and according to area, it is the third largest, only next to Russia and Canada.

讨论：

1、汉语“按人口计算”和“按领土面积计算”用面语“according to...“的结构来翻译，是不确切的。我们中国人往往一见到”按“字，就首先想到翻译成according to ，或者 in accordance with, 这是不妥的，国为“按”字并不能和according to 或 in accordance with 对等。其实，在这里可以用 in terms of 这么一个短语。表示“就……来说”、“按……来说“，是地道的英语。

2、population figure 里的figure 可以不要，说population 就可以了，in the whole world 里的whole 可以不要。 说 in the world 就可以了。it is the third largest 里的largest 也可以不要， 而承接着前面的结构下来，说 it is the third就可以了。 但“领土面积”只翻译成area，是不够的，应当翻译成territorial area.

3、至于only next to Russia and Canada 这句话，我们不妨来讨论一下：“次于”翻译成 next to 当然没借，但我们可以体会到next to 一般是指次于某一件事物，比如人家是第一，你就是第二，人家是第二，你就是第三；现在笼统地说 next to Russia and Canada 在语义上是不够清楚的。最好是改变一下说法。如翻译成 ranking only after Russia and Canada 或 coming only after Russia and Canada.

较好译文： in terms of population, China is the largest country in the world; and in terms of territorial area, it is the third, ranking only after Russia and Canada.
