The Past Simple Tense

一般过去式

We use the past simple tense for events that have already happened and that have already finished.

过去式一般用于已经发生的事情或者已经结束的事情。

It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened.  It could be many years ago or a few seconds ago.

不管事情发生于多久之前,可以是几年之前或者几秒钟之前。

例如:

Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago.

I dropped my pen a few seconds ago.

For positive statements in the past we use the following structure:

在肯定句中我们用以下结构:

subject + verb (in the past tense)

I walked.

He cried.

They jumped.

There are two types of verbs in the past tense - regular and irregular.

有两种不同的过去式形态——规则动词和不规则动词

First we will look at regular verbs.

首先我们看一下规则动词。

Regular Verbs

规则动词

I usually walk to school.

Yesterday I walked to school.

I usually wait five minutes for the bus.

Yesterday I waited ten minutes for the bus.

(for regular verbs we just add “ed” to the end to make the past tense)

(规则动词的过去式在动词结尾加“ed”)

例如:

I play football every Friday.

When I was young I played tennis.

I talk to my brother every day.

Yesterday I talked to my brother.

My mother likes to bake cakes every Sunday.

Last Sunday my mother baked two cakes.

(if the word ends in “e”, we can just add “d”)

(如果动词结尾是“e”我们只要加“d”)

bake  baked

live   lived

I usually carry my books in a bag.

Yesterday I carried my books in a box.

(If the word ends in “y” change the “y” to “i” and add “ed”)

(如果动词结尾是“y”我们需要用“i”代替“y”并加“ed”)

study  studied

cry cried

I like to dip my spoon in a big bowl of ice cream.

Yesterday I dipped my feet in the swimming pool.

(When the verb ends in one vowel + one consonant sound we double the consonant and add “ed”)

(当这个动词以一个元音+辅音我们需要双写结尾辅音字母并加“ed”)

stop  stopped

Verbs that need an “s” at the end in the present tense for he/she/it don’t need the “s” in the past tense.

一般现在式第三人称单数后的动词需要加“s”,但是在一般过去式中不需要加“s”

例如:

He talks to his mother every day.

He talked to his mother yesterday.

Irregular Verbs

不规则动词

Do---Did

did and didn’t are very useful words because they help us do two important things:

did和didn’t是非常常见的单词,因为他会帮助我们做两件重要的事情

“Did” helps us ask questions in the past tense.

“Did”帮助我们提问在过去式中

We use the structure:

我们用以下句式

Did + subject + verb

Did you eat breakfast today?

Did you go to school yesterday?

“Didn’t” helps us make negative past tense statements.

“Didn’t”可以表示一般过去式的否定形式

We use the structure:

我们用以下句型

Subject + didn’t + verb

I didn’t eat breakfast today.

I didn’t go to school yesterday.

Some other important irregular verbs to know are “be”, “go” and “have”

一些其他重要的不规则动词例如:be/go/have
