A Chinese Border City Gives Tourists A Glimpse Of Life In North Korea

ROBERT SIEGEL, HOST:President Trumphas called onChinatoput pressure onNorth Koreato stop testing missiles and to give up its nuclear program.North Korearelies onChinafor nearly all of its trade, and much of thatpasses throughthe Chinese city ofDandong. NPR Shanghai correspondentRob Schmitzbrings us this story of a border town in transition.
ROB SCHMITZ, BYLINE: At 6 in the morning, trucks line the streets ofDandong. They're filled withheavy machinery[重型机械],refrigerators,fruit, all of them waiting tocross a bridge over the riverintoNorth Korea. The bridge isa lifeline forNorth Korean leaderKim Jong Un.Seventy percent ofNorth Korea's trade passes over it, trade that's been a source of tension as the Trump administration tries to persuadeChinatocut exportsto the North.
But the tension feelsdistanthere on a boat packed with dozens ofgleeful[1]Chinese tourists all headed to the North Korean side of the river,hungry fortheexotic. Theferry boatfloats into a channel ofthe Yalu Riversurrounded by North Korean countryside. Touristsgaze[2]throughbinoculars[双筒望远镜]at North Korean farmersploughing[3]landwith their waterbuffaloes[4]. It's a beautiful,pastoral[5]site on a sunny spring day.

WANG YE: (Through interpreter)Fatty Kim the Thirdisn't good to China, yet we help him.North Korea's so poor. Just look at it over there. How can he do this to his own people?He's gone way over the line. He's asking for it.
SCHMITZ:Li Junhopes it doesn't come to that. Her family spent their livesmoving back and forthacross the border,escaping faminein China in the 1950s and thenfaminein North Korea in the 1990s. They finally found food.Liruns a restaurant whose balconyoverlooksthe North Korean countryside.
LI JUN: (Through interpreter) They live inrural production teamsover there. They farm and eat together in collectives. Tourists come to this side to take a look. But if war breaks out, nobody is going to come here, right?
SCHMITZ: That's not the futureGu Yuenvisions. She gives tours ofluxury condos[豪华公寓]just a football's throw away from the factories ofSinuiju[新义州], one of the North's largest cities. We're 31 floors up on top of a roof of the tallest of eight towers, the highest point inDandong.
GU YU: (Through interpreter) The residents have barbecues up here in the summer. It's an observation deck with agorgeous[12]view of North Korea.
