Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Sunflowers .1888.Van Gogh associated the color yellow with hope and friendship.he suggested that his four sunflowers canvases painted to decorate his house in Aries .express an “idea symbolising gratitude”.he seems to have been especially pleased with his picture.which he hung in the guest bedroom in anticipation of the arrival of his friend.the artist Paul Gauguin.

Cypress trees reminded Van Gogh of “Egyptian obelisks”.these dark trees were in a wheatfield close to the St-Remy mental asylum near Arles where the artist spent a year as a patient .they stand straight and tall in the middle of the wheat .and make a strong and deliberate contrast with the receding horizontal bands of the yellow field ,blue hills and sky

Monet painted this sketch of his wife .on the left .and a friend while on honeymoon in the qsummer of 1879.he worked in the open air .Grains of sand and shell from the beach are still embedded in the paint surface.

Honore -Victorin  Daumier (1808-1879)

On Quixote and Sancho Panza.about 1855

Daumier illustrates the episode from Cervantes’s novel where Don Quixote charges two advancing armies .His servant Sancho Panza knows that they are merely dust clouds caused by flocks of sheep and implores his master to return .Traces of an earlier sketch of the two figures are visible in the sky

The hay wain is the horse-drawn wagon shown crossing a Ford .in the distance labourers can be seen cutting hay in the fields the scenery is that of the river stour in constables native Suffolk .the red-roofed .whitewashed building on the left was the home of a local farmer .willy Lott.

The sitter was the Chief of Police in Napoleonic Roma (1810-14).a bust.perhaps representing Napoleons son .was originally included at the top left .this detail was painted over .presumably after the fall of Napoleon .as the oil paint has become more translucent over time .it has re-emerged as a ghostly  presence

The work seems to have been inspired by Rubens’s Portrait of Susanna Lunden .called ‘Le Chapeau de Paille’(The Straw Hat ).also in the National Gallery .which Vigee Le Brum has seen in Antwerp .in fact Rubens portrayed Susanna Lunden is a felt hat .in her self portrait Vigee Le Brun tidied up this anomaly

The silhouetted figure of degas’s cartoonist friend imitates pelligrini’s own drawing style ,pellegrini gesticulates with a cigarette towards an unknown friend.while contriving to hold his hat behind his back .in about 1876-7 he painted a portrait of degas .and this picture was degas’s return present

Rembrandt appears quite frail in this moving likeness painted in the final year of his life .his hands are limp.his skin is pasty.and even his characteristic wiry hair seems subdued .still.the portrait is painted with great sensitivity.paint is thickly applied in the highlighted areas of the face .while darker areas are more thinly painted

Rembrandt 1606-1669

Self portrait at the age of 34 1640

Rembrandt presents himself as wealthy,successful and confident .in keeping with his position as one of Amsterdam’s leading painters .his pose is taken from Titian’s man with a Quilted sleeve(on display elsewhere in the gallery).which was then thought to depict the Italian poet ludovico Ariosto .copying this famous pose was a bold statement:that painters were the equal of poets .
