A Review of The Sun Also Rises

    The Sun Also Rises  is written by Ernest Hemingway  and  portrays an American expatriate in Paris getting disillusioned after the war in the empty search for sensation.The novel received an immediate success because it reflects the disillusion of the lost generation .This novel also establishes Hemingway as a representative of writers who dealt with “lost generation ”.

        I was impressed by the distinctive characters and they are Jack Barnes ,Robert Cohn ,Brett Ashley and Pedro Romero . I want to take Jake as an representative example.Jake is the narrator ,who is self-controlled ,introspective and genteel .Jake was hurt in the war and got impotent .Under this condition , he needs to learn to be self-restraint.For instance ,in the chapter 4, Jake and charming Brett ‘s dialogue in the taxi , “Love you ?I simply turn all to jelly when you touch me ”,“Isn’t there anything we can do about it ?”Jake ‘s arm was around Brett and she was leaning back against him ,they were quite calm. “And there’s not a damn thing we could do,”he said.He doesn’t show any hypocritical and malicious acts when he knows his lover ‘s dissolute lifestyle .He is also introspective,after his indulgent romance ,he found Georgette Hobin ,a prostitute ,was vulgar and quite different from his original romantic expectation .He was suddenly aware that life in Paris is meaningless .“The Boulevard Raspail always made dull riding .It was like a certain stretch on the P.L.M between Fontainebleau and Monterau that always made me feel bored and dead and dull until it was over”(chapter 6).So he went with Bill to the valley of the Rio de la Fabrica for fishing .They were on the top of the height of land and saw great fields of yellow gorse ,wild strawberries growing on the sunny side of the ridge.They stayed five days at Burguete and had good fishing , chatting , hiking and relaxing .He is also gentle ,He always accompany Brett when she was sad and need comfort.

      In The Sun Also Rises, Jake may also puzzled and frustrated at a certain period of time but he adjusts himself and finds his mind actually. Hemingway ‘s iceberg theory of writing is famous .He uses economical style of writing to impress the readers.Sentence short ,uncomplicated ,but active ;words simple but filled with emotion .There are times when the most powerful effect comes from restraint and understatement .We can see this descriptions in chapter 13 during watching bull frighting and quarrel between Michael and Robert.For instance,“Is Robert Cohn going to follow Brett around like a steer all the time ?”This shows Michael ‘s long- time discontentment .

        The Sun Also Rises is a remarkable  novel for it’s impressive characters and economic writing style .To some extent ,This  novel also reveals that In the lifetime, people also have similar experiences with the characters in the novel. When exploring the way to the future ,they need to behave well ,learn to be self-controlled ,introspective and polite.Consider something deeply and observe inner principles .

    英文写不下去了，还是中文吧哈哈

最近在看海明威的《太阳照常升起》，一开始是看了这部电影，然后发现很喜欢。就去找了书来看，越发喜爱。我看的是中英文对照的，很好的是，译者对作者提到的一些地方，一些双关语，打趣的暗示都有解释，这就让我读来更有趣味了。书中杰克·巴恩斯是叙述者，就算主角啦，是一个很稳重的人，聪明，一眼看到什么会去思考，不会像小说中另一个追求女主角的人科恩一样冲动只有浪漫主义，当然他因为战争也有一点落下毛病，（听说，这是真实故事，关于海明威和另一个女人的love affairs,由于海明威本人有妻子，所以他把这种爱而不能的感觉用impotent来代替）。女主角是布蕾特，很新潮的一个女人，有魅力所以追求者蛮多，当然也会放荡。她自己的第一任老公在战争中死去，她因他有个爵位，以后用这个爵位信誉赊账。第二个应该就是迈克，迈克也是老兵，后期败落，是个醉鬼。但他倒是放任布蕾特自由，大概是也了解她。很多人对布蕾特持贬的观点，我倒是能理解她，看了电影和书，都还蛮喜欢她。可能我还是比较支持女性主义的，而且她本身也没有孩子，所以相对自由，也没有祸害谁。杰克算是她的蓝颜吧，也是个港湾，毕竟爱着，在她需要的时候总会出现，在她爱上斗牛士时还帮她牵线，归来还是拥抱。其实杰克和迈克是一类人，知道自己无法给布蕾特她想要的，就干脆放任她，给她一个回来的地方。后面有空我会主要分析罗伯特·科恩，说他为什么不被人待见。
