As Mrs. Richards would be going to a fancy-dress party with her husband in the
evening, she was busy trying her costume on. She intended to dress up as a ghost.
Though her costume consisted only of a sheet, it had had a dramantical effect. While
she was trying to find out whether the costume was comfortable to wear, Mrs. Richards heard someone knock at the front door. She considered the man to be the baker and
remembered to tell him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and to
leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to scare the poor man, Mrs. Richards quickly hid herself in the storeroom under the stairs. As it was, the man was the official
from the Electricity Board who had come to read Mrs. Richards's meter. Of course, the man was frightened out of his wits by Mrs Richards when he just opened the door of
the storeroom.
