The use of "cover"

In this lesson, Helen thanks Brad for "covering work," which is just another way of saying, "thanks for taking care of work." It means you'll finish and complete your work.

"Cover" has another meaning: to "cover" for someone if they couldn't work and you are taking care of their duties temporarily. Take a look below for more examples.

American Holidays

In America, federal holidays are never more than a day long, but many companies will, for example, give their employees the Friday after Thanksgiving off so they get a four-day weekend. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of every November.

Save for a few fixed date holidays such as Independence Day, which is always July 4th, and Christmas, which is always December 25th, American holidays are typically observed on floating Mondays, such as Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, or Labor Day, the first Monday of September. This means that Americans get several long weekends over the course of the year, and many take this opportunity to go on road trips or travel domestically. Some might even take a few days off in addition to the long weekend to travel to other countries.
