What is a Collection?

I have lots of stuff in my house. Lots of random stuff. But most of these things fall into one of two categories. Collectables and other random cool things. In my case most of my items are collectables. I collect fountain pens, bookmarks, plane models, books, Lego, art, stationery and lots of other miscellaneous items. In this short article, I will tell you what I think collecting is. The idea is concise and simple.

So I collect a lot of things. This is my hobby. Whether it's a collection I wanted to start or it just came together, it's something special. And that's my idea. To have a collection is to have a group of items that are special to you in your own way. And that's why people have collections. They want to have these special items that mean a lot to them. This is what I've found with myself and others. Whether it's the sentimental value or the emotional connection.

For an example of this idea, take my fountain pen collection. I have about eight very nice fountain pens. Now, they may not be the very best pens, but for example my vintage pen from the 1930s, it is an antique that I can learn from. How the nibs were forged back then and the differences today. That is the reason I got the pen and put it in my collection.

In other words, a collection is a set of items that the user collects together to create an environment and feeling that comforts the user in their own pleasure. That's my idea on collections and collectables. They may not need to be expensive, but they need to have a purpose and value.
