11.13 Daily Highlights of《Goodbye,Mr Chips》

第三、四章中多看了一眼的句子：

1.The house itself was ugly and pretentious.

这个房子本身又丑又矫揉造作。用pretentious这个词来比喻房子真是让人忍俊不禁，我不禁想像一栋“装X”的房子是什么样子。

2.He thought of Latin and Greek far more as dead languages from which English gentlemen ought to know a few quotations than as living tongues that had ever been spoken by living people.

用dead languages与living tongues、living language两个living形成对比，很妙。

3.So there he lived…with his quiet enjoyments of reading and talking and remembering…still fairly active for his years,drinking tea,receiving callers,busying himself...

这一段话中的动词多用现在进行时，尤其是我听了Eric对于进行时的讲解后，感到这段话的描写尤其生动，好像Chips的这些动作就发生在昨日。

4.He had made for himself a warm and busy corner of life.

温暖又充实的安身之处，读了很有穿着大毛衣在有暖炉的屋子里面喝茶的舒适感。

5.Chips did not hold with all this modern newness and freedom.

hold with这个表示赞成的表达我是第一次听说，又多了一个可以替换agree的同义表达。

6.It was even more terrifying that she should turn the tables by helping them.

turn the tables表示改变局面，转败为胜，是很有画面感的一个表达。今年早些时候我在一个podcast中听到一个女性主义流行乐榜单，就以这个短语命名，下面是这个榜单的介绍，请按需食用：“This list is part of Turning the Tables, an ongoing project from NPR Music dedicated to recasting the popular music canon in more inclusive – and accurate – ways. ”

今日课堂笔记：

1.touched their caps to him：向某人致敬➡️hats off to someone：对某人表示尊敬

两者一个是碰触帽檐一个是脱帽致敬，画面感十足。

➡️pat someone on the back：鼓励某人

2.spoonful&mouthful：一勺&一口 看似形容词其实是名词。

3.last an hour：last表持续，用法可见“每日一词”。

4.It's been very delightful meeting you：

nice meeting you表达又见面了/见完了，可以在告别的时候用。

5.And Chips also would be making his comments.I will be leaving比I will leave更有画面感，有将来的某时就已经在做的感觉。

6.Will you be wanting anything else？进行时和过去时都比现在时更礼貌，过去进行时是最委婉的：I was wondering比I wondered委婉。

7.His room was furnished simply and with schoolmasterly taste.一看就是老师的风格，taste这个单词用得简洁又达意。

8.legible：字迹清楚的；illegible：字迹不清楚的。

9.A as well as B：除了B还有A，前后的关系不是完全对等，不能对换。

10.Quite a character：形容很impressive的感觉，还可以说quite a read；quite a session。

11.a typical bachelor if ever there was one：如果世上有单身汉这种人的话，他绝对是一个典型代表。
