Sir Robert

In the book of Oscar Wilde, there is a man that gives me a very deep impression. He is Sir Robert. He wear clean and tidy suit every time he shows up. He is regarded as the ideal husband and a great gentleman by all the people around him. He is honored until Mrs Cheveley appears to ready to expose his secret to others. He begins to feel anxious and worried. The secter is the incorrect ways of getting his wealth.

At the very beginning of this story, I consider Robert as a charming and perfect person. He does well in his political work and loves and cares his wife.

He respects his wife in front of other people and is loyal to Mrs Robert. He tries his best to be perfect and all women adore his wife for marrying such a good husband. Then, Mrs Cheveley broke the peace of their life. She has evidence to prove that mistake made by Robert. He begins to feel horrible. She pose a threat to his perfect life. I think him as a timid man at that time because he has no courage to tell his wife the truth. He thinks the truth will make his life in ruin. When he turns to Lord Goring, there is a sharp contrast between them. Lord Goring is a man that dares to do anything he wants. However, Robert is lack of courage. Next, the speech of Robert changes my view towards him. He expresses his true feelings and wins the honor and respect from the audience including his own wife. I think he is so brave at that moment.

The following characters of Robert should be sincere. He loves his wife with all his heart. The reason why he is afraid of telling his wife the truth is that he fear to lose her love. From it , we can tell that he is also inconfident to both others and himself. The first reaction of his wife after knowing the truth makes him lose the confidence in himself totally. He feels sorrowful and regretful, which can also prove how sincere he is when he faces his love.

Lastly, he is also warm-hearted and kind. When he knows the coming marriage between Marble and Goring, he begins to stop it because he sees Mrs Cheveley dated with Goring one night. He doesn’t want Marble to be cheated. So he wanna cancel the wedding no matter how close he and Goring is.

I think there are mainly three reasons that Robert is unwilling to tell the truth. The first is that his wife puts too much expection on him. In the eyes of his wife, he is the best husband in the world, he does very well in every aspect including politics, manners and family. He is regarded as a completely successful man and a responsible man. She is proud of her husband. Because of her too much expectation towards him, he would rather be silent on the secret to keep him  perfect in the opinion of his wife. The second is the pressure from the people claiming that he is the ideal husband. The other women consider Robert as the model of an ideal husband. He was shaped as a man without any disadvantages. It seems that he is the god from heaven. They choose to ignore his mistakes and requires him to be a role of someone living in the imaginary world. The third is that he is afraid of losing the glory and hornor.Everyone in the society is selfish. Some seem to devote what he have to others. But in fact, they just choose this way to hide and control their selfishness. Robert has got used to the life that he is respected and adored. He does not want to be looked down. Living this kind of life fulfills his pursuit. The fourth is the darkness and on the top class of England. The aim of the author to write this book is to expose the lies of the toppest class. He wants to show us the real life of the lords. They dress well and live a rich life. But actually they are just the same as the common people.

The author draws a vivid picture for the readers. Sir Robert was given a complete and round characters. He is charming and brave. He is also timid and weak. No one is perfect, we are just trying to be perfect.
