It is not unusual to hear the stereotype of an impulsive and willful “post-00s” generation who reportedly spend too much money on online gaming or rewarding live streamers.
But a report from China Youth Daily has revealed another side of the story.
Although influenced by popular culture and trends, “the young generation treats buying more like a process of researching”, reported China Youth Daily on April 27.
Wang Yihan, 16, from Fuzhou No 1 High School, Fujian, is typically such a consumer. During her vacation, she decided to buy a Casio watch, but she didn’t pay for the type in high demand. Before making the purchase, Wang decided to research all of the options available.
“I looked up information on the different Casio watches on their website. To find the watch most suitable for me, I compared the functions of each model. Out of curiosity, I also did research on its founder, the cause of the founding and all the collaborations,” said Wang.
For Wang, researching products is as enjoyable as buying them.
Rationality is an important consideration for them, the report pointed out.
Sun Xiaoxue, 15, from Huairen No 1 High School, Shanxi, likes making her own journals.
To make delicate journals, many would buy lots of materials like washi tape or stickers for decoration, but Sun finds alternatives.
“I found many stickers that were bought when I was a child. Since most of them are kind of old-fashioned, I cut and spliced them to make them my own. The stickers make my journal more unique,” said Sun. “Meanwhile, it feels good for me to ‘turn waste into treasure’ as well as save money.”
For Liu Yu, 17, from Yantai Development Zone Senior High School, Shandong, her amount of purchases doesn’t directly reflect her level of interests. Although she is a lover of Han costumes, she barely spends money on them. “Instead of buying them, I prefer to learn about the culture and history behind the costumes,” said Liu.
