35. Search Insert Position

Description

Given a sorted array and a target value, return the index if the target is found. If not, return the index where it would be if it were inserted in order.

You may assume no duplicates in the array.

Example 1:

Input: [1,3,5,6], 5
Output: 2

Example 2:

Input: [1,3,5,6], 2
Output: 1

Example 3:

Input: [1,3,5,6], 7
Output: 4

Example 1:

Input: [1,3,5,6], 0
Output: 0

Solution

Binary search, time O(logn), space O(1)

题目求的实际上就是nums中第一个大于等于target的元素位置。

        if (nums == null || nums.length == 0) {
            return -1;
        }
        
        int left = 0;
        int right = nums.length - 1;
        
        while (left <= right) {
            int mid = left + (right - left) / 2;
            if (nums[mid] < target) {
                left = mid + 1;
            } else {
                right = mid - 1;
            }
        }
        
        return left;
    }
}
