Just Have Some Faith

Que sera sera(singing)

When I was just a little girl

I asked my mother what will I be

Will I be pretty

Will I be rich

Here's what she said to me

Que Sera Sera

whatever will be will be

the future's not ours to see Que sera sera

Unlike the Mom in the lyrics, My mom, the strongest and THE very best mom in the world actually has never taught me to “Que sera sera” a problem or a life choice, instead she has successfully engraved into my mind one catchy phrase-her aphorism- “just have some faith”.

“Just have some faith”, those four little words can be interpreted into “you just need to believe in yourself” or “try harder” or “put yourself together” or “there’s always a way out” under different circumstances. For my mom, she would simply conclude them all as “Just have some faith”.

Well, why is that important for you to know in order to really KNOW me?

Because as I look back, all the critical or not so critical decisions that I have ever made, they all somehow have something to do with those simple yet powerful words, including the fact that me being part of DaLian MBA Toastmasters Club.

I'd like to tell you , my friends, one of the critical decisions that made me who I am today.

You’ll have to time travel with me back to 10 years ago for this story.

I failed the first college entrance exam that summer in 2008 and I took it so badly. So badly that the whole family was shrouded by a huge mushroom cloud of my misery. At first, Mom tried to persuade me to accept the offer from Heilongjiang University, then I would have learnt Computing Science which could lead to a very promising career, by the way, from what we see today; the only thing is, I wasn’t interested. Not at all. Anyhow, it was Mom that changed her mind and along with Dad, respected my decision of retaking a senior year courses in high school and pursuing my “not a dream”- dream- to major in English. Here I am today. I teach, not just as a job or a career to pursue. I teach as a calling. Two roads were in front of me at that crucial moment. I probably would have taken the other one if it were not for their faith in me.

Fast forward to 2017, I met a guy that I really liked. It didn’t work out though. Mom knew that right from the beginning. I cried my eyes out and called mom when we broke up. I asked her, “what if he's the one, what if there won’t be such a man who loves me and whom I like so much out there,” she said, “you gotta have some faith, kid. Don’t ever think you’re not good enough.” I didn’t take it as badly as I did 10 years ago and recovered and moved on after a couple of weeks. Mom’s aphorism gave me the strength to believe in “love” no matter what, cause you “just need to have some faith”.

Sometimes in life, we get lost, other times we get hurt. At the moment of making the decision of turning left or right, there’s always a deep deep voice, calling you, to go towards the direction that you’re yearning for. There is A voice, only when you listen. I am lucky enough to have the best mom who adheres to that philosophy-the power of faith. She “just has faith” in me. And that makes me an idealist and optimist who deeply believe in efforts and all the good stuff in Life. Even though we don't necessarily see sunshine coming through the window when we wake up and open our eyes every morning.

It’s the faith that I have in all the members and future members here at Dalian MBA TOASTMASTER CLUB, in what we can accomplish together, in toastmasters AND it’s core values as a whole, that takes me here today.

But, it’s not just those critical moments in my life, actually those little words, they go with me everywhere and every day.You know what, when you do have some faith, it makes all the difference.
