单词

• concrete
  作名词表示水泥，混凝土；作形容词表示具体的、确定的。

它表示混凝土丛林，指充斥着现代建筑的丑陋不堪、不宜居住的城市：If you refer to a city or area as a concrete jungle, you mean that it has a lot of modern buildings and you think it is ugly or unpleasant to live in.

• camper van
  (吃、住设施齐全的)野营车。van表示厢式中小型货车；运货车。

• sat-nav
  satellite navigation的缩写，多指车载的卫星导航系统。

• work sth
  表示使用，操纵(机器或设备)：If you work a machine or piece of equipment, you use or control it.
     Many adults still depend on their children to work the video.
     很多成年人仍然要靠孩子来操作录像机。

• cock-a-doodle-doo
  (公鸡的啼声)喔喔喔。

短语

• not much of
  复习一下，表示“算不上某事，不怎么会某事”，英文解释会比较清楚一些：to not be a good example of something or not be very good at something.
     I'm not much of a dancer, I'm afraid.
     我恐怕不怎么会跳舞。
     It wasn't really much of a storm.
     这其实算不上是暴风雨。

• have sth out with sb
  把事情与（某人）谈开，英文解释为：to talk to someone about something they have done which makes you angry, in order to try to solve the problem.
     She'd been late for work every morning that week and I thought I'd better have it out with her.
     那一周她每天上班都迟到，我想还是把这个问题明白给她指出来比较好。

• come as standard
  成为标配。
     On the plus side, TalkTalk has announced that a mobile SIM "worth £90" will soon come as standard to all customers on its Plus TV package.
     从好的方面来说，TalkTalk宣布，“ Plus TV”套餐中的所有客户很快将标配“价值90英镑”的移动SIM卡。

• talk nonsense
  胡说八道。
     Nonsense/Don't talk nonsense! She's far too ill to return to work!
     一派胡言／别胡说！她远不至于病得没法回来上班！

• don't know a thing about sth
  复习一下，表示对……一无所知。

• there is no point doing sth
  做……是没有意义的。
     There's no point in crying for the moon.
     异想天开是没有用的。
     There's no point in beating about the bush, so I'll give it to you straight.
     也没有必要转弯抹角，我就有话直说吧。

• I wasn't quite expecting……
  我没想到会……
     I wasn't expecting a visitor. I was really thrown.
     我没想到会有人来，我真是措手不及。
     I wasn't expecting the interviewer to ask about my private life and was left floundering for a while.
     我没想到主持面试的人问我私生活的事, 就犹豫了一下。
