他是谁?

He was a businessman and scientist who was born in Holland.

However, he didn’t grow up in a scientific family and his father was just an ordinary basket maker.

As a teenager he went to Amsterdam(阿姆斯特丹) to work as apprentice at a linen draper’s shop where simple magnifying glasses(放大镜) were often used to see cloth fibers in greater detail so that the quality of cloth could easily be controlled.

In the shop, he was impressed by those magnifying lenses and developed a fascination with making himself a special one.

After getting married, he returned to his hometown where he set up his own draper’s shop, but he never stopped studying and crafting his very own microscopes.

As he tried many new method for polishing and grinding small lenses, the magnification of the lenses was successfully improved by 275 times. With the great breakthrough in invention of microscopic lenses, he was allowed to discover and describe single-celled organisms, also known as microorganism(微生物), bacteria and the blood flow in capillaries(毛细血管).

“My work, which I have done for a long time, was not pursued in order to gain the praise I now enjoy, but chiefly from a craving after knowledge”, he said.

His significant discoveries led to the development of the sciences of microbiology and bacteriology(细菌学).

He is also known as “the Father of Microbiology”.
