《谈笑》
——周汝昌
笑，是反映内心的一种面部表情。“笑脸相迎”，“满面春风”，“满脸堆下笑来”，证明笑和脸的关系。“启颜”，“霁颜”，“笑逐颜开”，文气了些，说的却是同样的关系。“笑面虎”，“笑在脸上，苦在心头”，情况不同了，“反映内心”云云，要重新研究了，可是“面部表情”依然有效。
脸，是笼统而言，笑，又与它的某些“局部”关系特别密切。
一是嘴，“笑口常开”，“笑得合不上嘴”，固然易见；“抿嘴”笑，“撇嘴”笑，“咧嘴”笑，同是嘴的事，又各有千秋。不过，有时候嘴是不让你看到使用何一形态的，“掩口胡卢”，你就只好去自己揣摩。
二是牙。文雅的人，大家闺秀，讲究“笑不露齿”。可是“粲齿”，“齿冷”免不了也略有表现。“笑掉大牙”那就越发欲文雅而无从了。
三是下巴。“解颐”尚可，竟至“脱颔”，要请正骨大夫给“拿”一“拿”才行。
四是眼。打心里高兴，会“眉开眼笑”，会“笑得眼眯成一条缝”。
笑只和脸——不管“整体”还是“局部”——有关系吗？亦不尽然。“拊掌”，在于手；“捧腹”，又关乎肚。
笑也有牵及全身的，“笑不可仰”，“笑弯了腰”，也还罢了，有时要“绝倒”。“笑得肚肠疼”，还不打紧”，“笑破肚皮”，甚至“笑熬”，那事情就非同小可了，势须寻医抢救。抢救无功，终于“笑死活人”，其事大概也是有过的吧。“笑熬”之后，也不一定算完，因为还可以“含笑”于地下呢。
“冠缨索绝”，这非古人不办。“喷饭满案”，今人犹可试行。
笑因人而异其态。夫子定是“莞尔”美人势必“嫣然”。《红楼梦》里的张道士理应是“呵呵大笑”。“回眸一笑”只能杨玉环。薛大傻子“呆霸王”决不会工于“巧笑”，他一发言，常常引起“哄堂”“轰然”。
“粲然”，“冁然”，“咍然”，“哗然”，何尝千篇一律？
论其声音，“哈哈”，“嘻嘻”，“嘿嘿”，“吓吓”，“噗哧”，“哑然”，还有“咯咯”之类，大约用来形容少女的“银铃般的笑声”。
“笑嘻嘻”，“笑眯眯”，“笑盈盈”，“笑吟吟”又是各有一副神情意态。
辨其种类，“苦笑”，“傻笑”，“憨笑”“假笑”，“陪笑”，“谄笑”，“冷笑”（虽无“热笑”，但“冷笑热哈哈”一语证明笑是有热的），“暗笑”，“狂笑”，“奸笑”，“狞笑”。
也有“隐笑”，“浅笑”，“娇笑”，“妍笑”，“长笑”，“佯笑”。这大抵过于“古雅”，但也无法罢免它们的存在权。
“会心微笑”，“相视而笑”，“付之一笑”，“仰天大笑”，“不觉失笑”，“无人自笑”，“似笑非笑”，“不笑强笑”……还有“皮笑肉不笑”（这种本领是最不易企及的）。
另有一类，“取笑”，“逗笑”，“招笑”，“贻笑”，“见笑”，“索笑”，“调笑”，“买笑”，“卖笑”。
至于“讪”“诮”“哂”“嗤”“讥嘲”“揶揄”……自然也难摒诸笑的大范围之外。
笑是如此多彩，当我们想到这一点，也会“忍俊不禁”的。
我常常想，即此而观，祖国语言是何等丰富，何等生动，这其间又反映出人民群众对生活的体会是何等深刻，何等全面。漫画家、创作家、表演家、说唱家、翻译家、语言学者、社会学者……岂能不向这种宝库中作一番巡游探讨。如果有这么一部词典，能够分门别类，搜集古今雅俗的词汇（“笑”的典故，另为一类，尚不在此数），让人能够一览而得，其意义应是十分肯定的。
我这种想法，也许早有学者付诸实践了，我还在此如数家珍，那就成了“笑柄”“笑料”了！
