Idioms - Under

(1) under the weather = fell a little sick, don't feel well

I got home early yesterday because I was a bit under the weather, I take a day off.


(2) under the microscope = to be watched very closely

The famous movie star finds it's difficult to live under the microscope. 


(3) to get under my/his/her skin = to upset, to bother

The sound of his snoring every night is really getting under my skin.


(4) to pay under the table = illegal money

The company got in trouble for paying government officer money under the table.


(5) under the radar = to not be noticed, not seen, not caught

He has no way to leaving, he is under the radar.


(6) to come under fire = to be criticized severely, to be attacked

You will be come under fire if your mun finds the broken vase.


(7) to throw someone under the bus = to hurt someone for your own benefit, to betray /bɪˈtreɪ/

I was shocked to find out that my co-works threw me under the bus.


(8) under one's breath = to speak softly to yourself, usually to complain 说给(他/她)自己听

“I hate washing dishes” he said under his breath.


(9) right under one's nose = clearly visible, obvious, in front of me

Police can' t believe that she was gone under their noses.


(10) under the gun = pressure to do sth, a deadline

I'm under the gun to make sure this project is finish on time.


(11) water under the bridge = it's passed, not important today

We had a big argument a few years ago, but it's all water under the bridge now. Both of us should forget it and work together again.


(12)  to sweep it under the rug = to avoid and hide sth bad, ignore sth difficult.

I know it's difficult for us, but can't just sweep it under the rug and pretend it doesn't happened.


(13) to go under the knife = to have surgery, an operation

Many women go under the knife these days because they expect to improve their appearance /əˈpɪərəns/ (good looking)


(14) to be under the influence = get drunk, drank alcohol

He got arrested for driving under the influence.

His father's instruction rained influence on his behaviour. 他父亲的教导对他的行为起了很大影响。


(15) under pressure = to feel in a stressful situation, be stressed

I'm under a lot of pressure because I lost my job for long.
