You must first install .NET Framework 3.5 Beta 2 (NOT the May 2006 CTP, nor Framework 3.5 Beta 1). The easiest way to get this is to install Visual C# 2008 Express. This is a small download (relative to the standard Visual Studio) and includes other useful things such as a highly functional IDE, the MSDN, and SQL Express. (So far, I've had no problems running Visual C# 2008 Express alongside Visual Studio 2005).

To run LINQ to SQL queries, you will need SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2000, or SQL Express (the latter comes with Visual C# 2008 Express).

LINQPad is self-updating, so you don't need to check back for updates. An exception to this is when the next beta or release candidate of the .NET Framework 3.5 ships (LINQPad may temporarily become unrunnable).
