11月晨读复盘–Goodbye, Mr. Chips

第一次参加晨读,早晨时间不允许,全程只能事后听回放。老实讲对这种几十年前的英文书不是很感兴趣,而且感觉生词太多,超出我的能力范围,但是认真听过回放后发现依然可以在自己的能力范围内学到很多,所以这次我的目标也是把晨读中Eric提到的内容学明白就好。非常感谢Eric!

以下是笔记流水账,很多地方还需要再查字典做功课。

1. get on in years: (字典上没有查到)年纪渐老

When you are getting on in years, you get very sleepy at times, and the hours seem to pass like lazy cattle moving across the landscape.

进行时态的使用使得行文更有画面感

当并不想表达强烈的转折的意味时,however, despite这类表转折的词可以放在句中或句尾。

as well as 和and不一样,强调的是前面的部分,and是并列平行关系

口语中常用,表赞美、惊奇等等这种情形

动名词,比较正式。可以换成she,但口语化了

Just as the body needs regular exercise, so too an engine needs to be run at regular intervals.

Just, too都可以省略

62. overhear 无意听见

Hi, guys, I overheard your conversation, you talking about ....

63. not half bad = pretty good 还不错

“Not half bad for an old chap like him.”

64. Too old at fifty- why, fellows like that are too young at fifty.

why 在这里是个语气词
