FOCUS

Section Aims:

Use creativity to develop a new students club

Use target language

Write a short presentation

Direct the students' attention to the photo on the first Focus Page. Ask them what is happening in the picture. What are the people in the picture doing? Ask the students what kind of club it might be, and whether it is a good one. Have the students come up with words that describe a good student club, and write them up on the board. After that, divide the students into small groups and have them complete the table in Activity 1, brainstorming different subjects for clubs.

Give them enough time to come up with interesting subjects for clubs; make sure that all the students are making notes in their books. When all the groups have finished discussing, divide the class into new groups, and have each student present the ideas for clubs they discussed in their previous groups. After that, have each group choose one club that they like and have them complete Activity 2, writing down more details about it. Walk around and monitor; provide assistance if necessary.

Next, ask the students what they will do to enrol new club member. After the different groups have shared some ideas, direct their attention to the questions in Activity 3. Encourage the students to use the target language they've learnt in the unit (e.g. asking and stating about obligation, personalty adjectives).

Provide each group with scrap paper, and have them start sketching out a poster promoting their club, incorporating the ideas from the previous exercise.

When a group has agreed on an idea, give them a sheet of A3 paper. Give the groups enough time to draw their poster; then tell the students to prepare a short presentation of their club.

Have the groups present their clubs to the class; then have them put their posters on the wall.

Next, tell the students that it is now time to sign up for the clubs they are interested in. Provide each group with a slip of scrap paper.

The club members should take turns walking around mingling while a club representative stands by the poster, trying to get other students to sign up for the club. If a student wants to join the club they should sign their name on the slip of paper. When the students have finished mingling, have them discuss what they thought of the different clubs. Which club managed to attract the most members? Encourage the students to give positive feedback to the other clubs. Conclude the class by having the students vote for the best club poster.
