2018年1月26日，本次达沃斯世界经济论坛迎来了重头戏——美国总统川普的演讲。在本次演讲中，川普一反常态，宣称“美国优先”并非“美国孤立”，美国经济的增长也会带动世界经济的增长。但实际上，在川普演讲前，美国代表团的表现已引发了外界对美国保护主义政策的担忧。24日，美国商务部长罗斯在新闻发布会上表示，美国在准备一系列针对中国的贸易行动，包括对钢铁和铝征收关税。而就在此前不久，川普批准了对进口太阳能板征收最高达30%的关税，并将对大型家用洗衣机实行进口配额限制，而且征收最高达50%的关税。
