The Negatives

1.       Students relying too much on social media for education tend to lose the face-to-face touch. The body language is lost which is otherwise observed in traditional classrooms. Body language is an integral part of human communication and those relying on methods to communicate via technology lose the essence of clues as to what the person is actually implying. Non-verbal cues are essential in understanding the whole part of the communication process.

2.       The lack of proper use of grammar and spelling in written communication is another negative. Students prone to social media think that this how written language ensues. The downside is that they are not equipped with utilizing the correct format of writing. In a formal setting, if someone were to read, the person will have difficulty in grabbing the gist of the discussion and hence, the communication will be lost. Woe to tweeting and texting!

3.       Retention problems are the gravest of all. Students with access to social media and technologies that are employed to deliver lectures or impart education tend to get distracted with a lot of noise present on these platforms then they would with a book. Assignment Help can be sought online. The basic drawback is there is no method to cut down on this noise. Distractions will persist. So memorization is better served through books/in-class lectures rather than social media.

The positives

1.       Noise listed as negative above can also be treated as a positive. How? See since there is a lot of noise present over the internet, it makes it easy for the students to filter out the irrelevant/unimportant stuff and instead focus on content that matters. In addition, it makes it easy for the researchers to do effective research as the internet has become online library as well as a means of employing search engines to ascertain the validity of the content.

2.       Team projects can be more effectively handled with social media such by creating a Facebook group where everyone can lend input and can collaborate with each other over the progress of the project. You can even use Twitter (I know I said woe to it above) to create hashtags for the said project and share ideas using it.

Hence, above are some ways (both negative and positive) in which social media impacts education.
