Disappointing and wrong decision on Huawei

Oliver Dowden, UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, announced in the meeting on July 15, 2020:

“So to be clear from the end of this year telecoms operators must not buy any 5G equipment from Huawei. And once thetelecom security bill is passed it will be illegal from then to do so.”

“It is necessary and indeed prudent to commit to a timetable for the removal of Huawei equipment from our 5G network by 2027. Let me be clear, this requirement will be set out in law by the telecom security bill.”

“Our decision in January had already set back that rollout by a year and cost up to a billion pounds.”

“Today’s decision to ban the procurement of new Huawei 5G equipment from the end of this year will delay rollout by a further year and will add up to half a billion pounds to costs.”

“Requiring operations in addition to remove Huawei equipment from their 5G networks by 2027 will add hundreds of millions of pounds further to the cost and further delay rollout.”

“This means accumulative delay to 5G rollout of two to three years and costs of up to 2 billion pounds. “

Ed Brewster, a spokesperson for Huawei UK,said:

“This disappointing decision is bad news for anyone in the UK with a mobile phone. It threatens to move Britain into the digital slow lane, push up bills and deepen the digital divide.”

“Instead of “leveling up” ,the government is“leveling down” and we urge them to reconsider. We remain confident that the new US restrictions would not have affected the resilience or security of the products we supply to the UK.“

“Regrettably our future in the UK has become politicized; this is about US trade policy and not security. Over the past 20 years, Huawei has focused on building a better connected UK. As a responsible business, we will continue to support our customers as we have always done.”

“We will conduct a detailed review of what today’s announcement means for our business here and will work with the UKgovernment to explain how we can continue to contribute to a better connected UK.”

As the CEO of the UK telecom company,Philip Jansen also warned of “outages” and possible security risks if the sector was told to curtail all business with the Chinese technology company during the building of 5G network upgrade.

Whatever the case, a decision which has already been overturned once may still be fought over in the months ahead.

Swedish Ericson as Huawei’s opponent declared:

“Today’s decision removes uncertainty that was slowing down investment decision around the deployment of 5G in the UK… and we stand ready to work with the UK operators to meet their timetable.”

Finnish Nokia as Huawei’s opponent declared:

“We have the capacity and expertise to replace all of the Huawei equipment in the UK’s networks at scales and speed… with minimal impact on the people using our customers’ network.”

The Guardian of UK analyzed that:

It was noticeable that the UK government did not wish to take ownership of the decision to ease out Huawei.

The attitudes of France and Germany were:

So far the head of France’s cyber security authority has ruled out a total ban on Huawei, and Germany’s Deutsche Telekom,Huawei’s largest customer in Europe, has argued firmly against any blanket ban on individual vendors.

As the Chinese ambassador to Britain,Liu Xiaoming said:

It has become questionable whether the UKcan provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment for companies from other countries.
