PART ONE VOCABULARY

1.affliction

affliciton:something that causes pain or suffering, especially a medical condition痛苦折磨,尤指病痛

2.demystify

demystify:to make a subject that seems difficult or comlicated easier to understand, especially by explaining it in simple lanuage浅显易懂地解释

3.flunked

flunk:If you flunk an exam or a course, you fail to reach the required standardt

e.g.I flunked a chinese course last term.

动词短语:

flunk out of  sth:to be forced to leave a school or college because your work is not good enough

4.layman

layman:A layman is a person who is not trained, qualified, or experienced in a particular subject or activity.外行;门外汉;它的相反词就是expert

5.fanciful

fanciful:If you describe an idea as fanciful, you disapprove of it because you think it comes from someone's imagination, and is therefore unrealistic or unlikely to be true.[disapproval]空想的

6.chaos

Chaos is a state of complete disorder and confusion.混乱

7.addressing

9.vulnerable

vulnerable:.they are easily hurt physically or emotionally.   ADJ-GRADED 能被表示程度的副词或介词词组修饰的形容词]脆弱的;易受伤害的;

vulnerability今晚看经济学人讲央行行长zhouxiaochun的文章中就提到financial vulnerability

10.pedantic

[ADJ-GRADED 能被表示程度的副词或介词词组修饰的形容词]过分拘泥于细节或传统的;学究气的;迂腐的;If you think someone ispedantic, you mean that they are too concerned with unimportant details or traditional rules, especially in connection with academic subjects.[disapproval]

11.knotty

复杂的;难以解决的;棘手的;A knotty problem is complicated and difficult to solve

12.intelligible

可理解的;明白易懂的;Something that is intelligible can be understood.

13.diffident

羞怯的;胆怯的;缺乏自信的;Someone who is diffident is rather shy and does not enjoy talking about themselves or being noticed by other people.

14.circuit,clout

circuit:(in sport)a series of games or matches in which the same players regularly take part

clout:[uncountable]power and influence

political/financial clout

I knew his opinion carried a lot of clout with them.

15.southpaw,lanky

southpaw: a person who prefers to use their left hand rather than their right, especially in a sport such as boxing

lanky:(of a person)having long thin arms and legs and moving in an awkward way

16.chunky

chunky: thick and heavy

17.snuffing out

snuff out: stop or destroy something completely

18.rhapsodize

rhapsodize:to talk or write with great enthusiasm about something

19.frenzied

frenized:a state of great activity and strong emotion that is often violent or frightening and not under control

20.cupidity

cupidity:a strong desire for more wealth, possessions, power, etc. than a person need

21.misapprehension

misapprehension:a wrong idea about something, or something you believe to be true that is not true

22.solitary

solitary:done alone; without other people

23.ecstatic

ecstatic:very happy, excited and enthusiastic; feeling or showing great enthusiasm SYN:delighted

24.medium

It tries to evaluate serious works of art and to place them in the context of what has been done before in that medium or by that artist.

medium:

1.a way of communicating information,etc. to people传播信息的媒介,方法,手段

themedium of radio/television

e.g.Television is the modern medium of communication.

2.something that is used for a particular purpose方法、手段、工具。

3. the material or the form that an artist ,a writer or musician uses(艺术创作中使用)材料,形式

themedium of paint/poetry/drama此文中应该说爱是评论的一种方式,属于第一种解释

25.aesthetic

As a reviewer your job is more to report than to make an aesthetic judgment.

aesthetic:concerned with beauty and art and the understanding of beautiful things美学的、审美

e.g.an aesthetic appreciation of the landscape用审美的眼光欣赏风景

26.trot out

They will trot out the hard-won words of their college education

trot out:to give the same excuses, facts, explanations, etc. for something that have often been used before反复提出陈旧的观点

27.outlandish

outlandish:strange or extremely unusual

28.lunacy

lunacy:behaviour that is stupid or crazy同义词madness

e.g.a comedy show full of inspired lunacy

29.sermon

sermon:a talk on a moral or religious subject, usually given by a religious leader during a service

30.frail

frai:lweak; easily damaged or broken

e.g.Human nature is frail.

31.metabolism

the chemical processes in living things that change food, etc. into energy and materials for growth新陈代谢

这周读书读的不如上周开心,可能读到不熟悉的领域,还有一些jargon。运动那章我看的心情浮躁,一开始查了很多词导致读书进度拖延,后面的几页都看的草草了事。这个月读完这本书后我得再读一遍。
